OXNARD, Calif. (AP) - The Dallas Cowboys cut quarterback Quincy Carter, owner Jerry Jones said Wednesday.
Jones confirmed the third-year player's release to a group of reporters at training camp. Team officials declined to comment until an afternoon briefing by coach Bill Parcells.
The team's Web site on Wednesday cited witnesses saying Carter was taken by car from the team hotel parking lot before practice.
Carter's agent, Eugene Parker, did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
Carter, who started all 16 games last season, came to camp expecting to be the starter again. The other quarterbacks in camp are 40-year-old Vinny Testaverde, who is reuniting with Parcells, rookie Drew Henson and unproven second-year player Tony Romo.
The Cowboys drafted Carter in the second round out of Georgia in 2001. He was named the starter to replace Troy Aikman during his first training camp, but he struggled and only started the first eight games. He went 3-5, completing 90 of 176 passes for 1072 yards, five TDs and seven interceptions.
The next year he was the starter out of camp again, leading Dallas to a 3-4 record before losing the job to Chad Hutchinson.
Last season, the Cowboys went 10-6 with Carter starting and got back in the playoffs in Parcells' first year in Dallas. He threw for 3,302 yards, but had 21 interceptions and 17 touchdowns. He was intercepted at least twice six times.

Grimey,
If you don't care, and have nothing to contribute to the thread but smartass comments, then I suggest you ignore the thread and STFU. -
Hell he lasted longer than I thought he would.
Carter is not a QB, he's an athlete. Running around making plays like he did at Georgia is great in college, but there are no "Wake Forrests" on the sunday schedule.
He's fallen in the same place that Randal Cunningham and Kordell Stewart and the like have fallen. Mark my words Michael Vick will join him. McNabb and McNair have only lasted as long as they have because they cashed in athleticism and learned to stay in the pocket and throw the football.
Oh yea, I know those are some great "QBs" but they will never and I repeat NEVER lead a team to the Superbowl Title. Their teams may be good and they may make a run in the playoffs but once you reach that level the defense will defend the mobile QB. McNair came the closest but he came as close as he ever will. Defenses at that level have their shit together and play as a unit.
Case in point...name the last Nebraska QB to start at QB for a NFL teamand they have had some great athletes at QB.
I hate the Cowboys, love Parcells but hate the Cowboys. It's sad for Quincy...I guess he will have to learn how to communicate now, because I've never been able to understand a word he says. -
Another Cowboy that is right in line with the long standing tradition of high morals and unblemished ethics of that fine program. What a complete SUCKER!

Rumor is he failed a second mandatory drug test (evidently, he was in a mandatory NFL drug rehab program), and the CB's did not want to pin their hopes and devote a great deal of effort on a starting QB with those kinds of problems and 2 strikes already. One more failed test and he would have been banned, leaving the cowboys with a backup QB running the show. If they're going to commit the practice reps to someone -- might as well be to someone who can contribute long-term and has no axe over their head!.
No great loss. He wasn't very good anyways !!!
It's going to be a VERY interesting seaon !!! -

Let's be honest. You'd trade your QB for McNair in a heartbeat.
Why such vitriol for the black QB? Ever heard of Doug Williams?
P.S. You're spot-on about Mike Vick.If God had intended us not to masturbate he would've made our arms shorter.

Good. He sucked.

Funny how you brought it up. Although, I don't think McNair has EVER been mobile, so I do agree that he missed it on that one.my t.v. is wide and so am I. -

In the NFL running QBs are going to be short lived. Every linebacker out there can run with any QB...except for Vick at this time. Even McNabb sits in the pocket much longer now than he did his first couple of years.
Personally I liked Doug Williams, but his legs weren't considered a weapon of that offense. He had a running game and a hell of a set of receivers. I also think Warren Moon was one of the greatest most under rated QBs to ever play. But he didn't have a running game behind him. He also was not trying to make plays with his legs.
And no I wouldn't trade our QB for McNair. I personally do not like McNair. He is good, don't get me wrong, but I don't like him. The absence of Eddie George will either expose him or prove him worth of the MVP last season. I think it will expose him. I didn't like him in college and I don't like him in the NFL. I don't like Payton Manning either.
I applaud Parcells for getting rid of the athlete in favor of a true QB. I think too many times the professional and large colleges get wrapped up too much in "athlete" and forget to take a player. Trent Dilfer was considered a horrible QB...but his team won a superbowl...they traded him, got Elvis Grbac (supposedly an upgrade) and they lost. Brad Johnson the same way in Tampa. He sucks...but they won. Pittsburgh is as guilty of that as anyone. Drafted Kordell who was mediocre in college...but could run. And as long as he stayed "slash" he was great, but under center, running the showonce he decided to sit in the pocket and be a more traditional QB..he sucked.

The Steelers will be middle of the road this year, the O-line is in shambles. Next year they will be on top again and Cowher will get his first of many Super Bowls. -

Sweet website.
I think you are right. Middle of the road this year. Oline is a mess, but so is our secondary. Although, I think that has a lot to do with scheme. I am also concerned about all the Pro-Bowl linebackers that we seem to just release every year.
and yea...I would trade Maddox...but that doesn't count, I would trade him for alot less than McNair...not as "less" as say Todd Blackledge but close
And the Iggles do suck. They will be down this year on defense and I personally can't wait until they play the Ravens. I want to see Ray Lewis and that defense to beat the living shit out of Terrel Owens. If I had the money I would pay their fines. -

and it won't happen again this year...NO DEFENSE.
The eagles might be the most unbalanced offense/defense wise since the Dan Fouts San Diego Chargers era.
And it's not like your division is the sisters of the poor. Dallas will be very good. Giants will be improved. Redskins will be greatly improved.
Philly is Pittsburgh's little brother always trying to measure up. Get a defense, get a QB, get a RB then...maybe you can play with the big boys. -

In the Ryan years the offense was not very good. Now a days they have the offense but no defense.
The unbalanced offense/defense was based on last years team. This year however they did add Kearse but their secondary is not up to snuff and the Linebacking corps are weak. I think losing Deuce Staley will be bigger than they think. Just looking over their roster, I don't see a quality RB in there that can carry the load. I don't think they have the talent to compete against the top dogs in the NFL.

Hey Gitreel,
At least you have Vinny, he may be past his prime, but I'll bet
that with Bill and Keyshawn, he'll do okay. Watched him for 5 years
now. I'm not a Cowboy fan, but always liked Vinny Interceptaverde as
we Jetfans used to call him! -
I knew the superbowl post was coming
Westbrook and Buckhalter are both excellent running backs. Either would have gone well over the 1200 yard mark possibly more if they were the feature back. Kind of hard to get yards when your sharing duties with 2 others. Staley could have stayed home and should have IMO, as should any holdout with a signed contract. The only glaring deficiency they had last year and the years before that is at WR. Owens is going to change that.....hopefully. McNabb will finally have someone to throw the ball at which will open up a lot of other avenues.
Edit: Interceptaverde ROFLMAO. Northcat, interesting piece of trivia I came across. Ever here of the Steagles. They played during WW2 due to the lack of players. -

A new twist ------
Gene Upshaw (head of the NFLPA) is prepared to file a grievance with the cowboys because he feels the Q was wrongfully terminated. -

Every year every team that plays in the superbowl has a good running back. The only real exception of a team winning without a "main" RB was the Rams and they had Faulk. Owens will help them out...I still hope the Ravens kill him when they play(not literally)....but he's the only wideout you have. Pinkston, Mitchell and McMullen...I just don't see another "Quality" wideout in there.
I just don't think a QB dominate team can win the superbowl. Elway couldn't win until they got Davis. Bradshaw didn't win until Franco. As much as I hate to say it...I think the Cowboys will in that division. Parcells took them along way last year with a terrible QB and 2nd rate running backs. Vinny is no Montana but with George he won't have to be. -
