  1. I have an important question for anyone whom can pick thier brains on this one!!!

I copied one of my DVD+R movies to a DVD-R what I mean is I made an exact copy on the fly of my +R and burnt on a -R... Heres what happened? Or why does this happen? My mom's dvd player can't play +r disks.. So I bought her some -R's.... Any rate. After I copied my DVD+R to the -R I tried it in her player and it didn't work? I then tried it in my player which reads both + or -.. And it played just fine?

Can anyone tell my why this has happened? Does this happen. WHen you burn on a certain type of media it transfers its format to another type of disk?? I think I am crazy but a guy at work said it happened to him before as well?

Is there a fix for this or is this just how it is?

    THanks

    a + format can not "transfer" over to a - format ...

maybe her dvd player just cant play burned disks that well

  3. If you burn - media, you'll continue to have - media. Burning doesn't change the format. You jumped to this conclusion because the - disc you burned can't be read by your mom's DVD player.

The probable cause is that you burned "on the fly". This is not the safest course ... your problems are sufficient proof of that. It's best to have your burning software write to your hard drive before actually burning to the DVD.

    Hello,

Also try different media. I had a disc that wouldn't play on my sony but did on my toshiba. I just burnt it to another disc brand and it worked just fine on the sony (sorry can't remember what symbol it was, though both dvd players can play both - and + r discs).

@BJ_M, are you saying that you can't do a direct copy only, something like an image etc?

surely if you rip the DVD '+' to your HD and then burn to '-' it will work?

I'm just ranting here as I haven't got a clue but the way I look at it is that the original files on the HD are the same as the '+' before they were burnt to DVD '+'. The way they are burnt to disc is different maybe than a '-' though but if I was to rip the files from the burnt DVD '+' surely I can burn it to a '-'?

No, that's not what BJ_M is saying.
The poster thinks that "+" and "-" are some sort of data. They're nothing.

Burning on the fly is fine, but CAN be abusive.

I suspect the player just cannot read recordable media or is dirty.

  7. I have used DVDShrink to rip DVD+R and burn to DVD-R and vice versa. Never had a problem. DVD Decrypter will probably work, too, in the ISO mode, but I haven't tried it yet.

    cheers BJ_M

the DVD may also have a corrupt structure that has been 'butchered'. This is why some standalones either play or don't play them as they simply lose navigation due to invalid references

in most of these cases media has nothing to do with it

    @spankey, is your mom's player a Sony?

p.s. I can't understand why standalone manufacturer's dont make standalones that have playback success like $20 DVD-ROM's!!

    spankey:
The format of the input disc (in your case +) will not transfer to the output disc (in your case -). Only the data is written accross. The burning software will recognize that the output disc is a - and apply the proper formatting before copying the data.

I agree with the others that either the brand of - disc is incompatible with your mom's player or something was corrupted in the transfer.
You may want to be more specific about your player and your mom's model number as well as the media ID of the - disc. You can use dvdinfopro to get the media information. There is some compatibilty info in the players section of this site. If the info is not there try posting here again.
