Is there any benefit to using Firewire over USB 2.0 for this purpose? Standard FW is 400Mb vs. 480Mb for USB 2.0. Both are several times the max transfer speed of even an ATA133 HDD. In other words, is it worth spending the extra bread for a FW case (maybe for other than just having a free FW jack and no more free USB's)?

If you need additional USB ports just buy a hub as they are relativly inexpensive..

Just my opinion from experience, but Firewire always works, USB usually does. What I do is get a combination box that has both Firewire and USB and you have the best of both setups and better flexibility. Only costs a few dollars more and I doubt you will ever regret the investment.
I use both USB 2.0 and Firewire and USB has never worked anyway near the speed of Firewire. Never had a Firewire problem, but have had some problems with USB and DVD burners on several different machines. -
I agree with redwudz's assessment. I had an external firewire/USB1.1 enclosure with an Oxford chipset. The firewire always worked and was never an issue with speed.

There is a difference in bus architecture between USB and FireWire. FireWire more closely resembles SCSI so you're going to have less problems runing devices through FireWire. There have been plenty of stories here regarding bad experiences with USB enclosures. FireWire chains easier too.
