I have a 500GB external USB Maxtor HDD. I came with NTFS. I want to use it with my Philips 5990 DVD player, which requires Fat32. I used Swissknife to create a Fat32 partition. My XP machine won't recognize the drive at all now and neither will the Philips player. It freezes my computer until I unplug the drive.

    Please help.

Try plugging it in after you boot into Windows, then use the maxtor tools to repartition and format it.

Must have been a problem with Swissknife. I didn't have any problems when I formatted a external 320GB HDD with Swissknife using FAT32. It reads on my Vista computer OK. And it also reads properly on a 5990.

XP (And most other Windows OSs) won't work for paritioning a hard disc over 32GB to FAT32, that's what Swissknife is for. Unless Maxtor Tools can do that?

Swissknife is very fast. (And I thought foolproof.) I'd try running it through again. A full FAT32 drive may read a bit slow, but since it's going to use a USB interface, I doubt you will notice. I stuffed over 400 Xvids on a 320GB drive. I used this method from bwd777 to set up the HDD: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers/philips-dvp-5990/9370?#70038

Yep. That was it. I was able to reformat the drive correctly this time using Swissknife. XP sees it and so does the 5990.

    Thanks!

We would need a bit more information.

What brand and model of external hard drive?
    Capacity?
Does it work on a computer?
What brand and model of DVD player?
Is the drive plugged directly into the player, no hubs?
Does a USB flash drive work with the player?
Is it formatted as FAT32? (Plug it into a computer, R click on the drive and select 'Properties'. You should see 'FAT' in the file system info box.)

    And welcome to our forums.
