Bitsetting Question

I have a question about bitsetting. The way I understand bitsetting is that it fools the dvd into thinking the disk is dvd-rom. My question is this if you bitset to dvd-rom how could the burner know that the disk is dvd+rw? Wouldn't it refuse to rewrite it because it thinks you put dvd-rom disk although it's really a dvd+rw?

The bitsetting is mainly for standalone dvd players compatibility. DVD writers should have no problem identifying it as a dvd+rw.

If I'm not mistaken, a burner looks at the media type (not the book type) to see what type of disc is inserted. So a burner knows if you've inserted a writable (DVD±R/RW) or store bought (DVD-ROM) media.
