Macrovision is a protection code embeded in the video signal when the tape or disk is recorded. A VCR's automatic gain control senses changes in brighteness an contrast in the video signal and adjests accordingly. Macrovision sends a fake signal making the AGC think the picture is too bright or too dark and does it so frequently that the resulting picture is distorted. Older VCRs from the mid-eighteies and earlier don't have this so it doesn't affect them. Hope this helps.
