  1. Hi, this is my first post here.

I want to tape my DVDs onto VHS tapes.

I was told about a company called Sonel who do cables to defeat macrovision, I contacted them but have heard nothing in over a week.

So - does anyone know of another company that does these kinds of cables.

Or - could someone recommend a DVD player which I can easily hack to remove macrovision.

    I live in the UK.

    cheers.

Here's a link to Sonel, http://www.sonel.com/. Another popular device is Sima CopyMaster, but I'm not sure of UK dealers.

Look to the left side you your screen

There are many DVD player hacks listed that will remove macrovision and region coding, you only need to find one that is sold in the UK in that list. Most only need a command from the remote to make them MV and Region-free.

  5. If you know anyone who has an old top-loading vcr that was made before macrovision became vogue, it will not have the electronics to detect macrovision.

Before I got the Sima Videocopy Master, mentioned above, this is the way I did it. BTW, Sima has a site and more than likely you can find what you need there. I'm sure they sell something, otherwise, what's the point of having a site.
If it works, don't fix it.

i.e., i was thinking of how DVDdecrypter, etc. removes macrovison and CSS. is this not the same macrovison? Once u have a DVD(R) w/out this protection would u be able to copy to VHS w/out problems?

i have to admit im not all that knowledgeable when it comes to running a DVD signal to a VCR, etc. (seems like a dumb idea to me in the first place).

i just thought i'd offer a suggestion. maybe it makes no sense.

OK well I found that instead of all these fancy gadgets like that macrovision red and all that all that other junk if you want to back up your dvds Just buy a PlayStation 2 original 39.99 at your local game store as your source for the signal for some reason it works and I'm guessing it dosnt output the macrovision signal ( Im using a Toshiba dr420 as my recorder and its like magic)

  11. It's ironic that Sony would provide the loophole around Macrovision.

The age of a vcr does not effect it's reaction to macrovision. Macrovision worked by varying the AGC circuit of the VCR and since VHS VCR's use a fixed AGC they were effected by macrovision. There were a very few VHS decks that used a variable AGC,mainly very early VHS with special effects. Oddly all beta vcr's ignored macrovision because they used a variable AGC. They recorded the macrovision signal, they just ignored it,itwas on the beta copy and if you tried to copy the beta tape to VHS,macrovision would rear it's ugly head. I used a Sima SCC to make VHS backups, back in the day.
You could rip the dvd to your computer, burn it on a DVD-RW and any DVD player should then allow you to copy from that DVD-RW.
There are older DVD players that remove macrovision and also DCP,they will require a BIOS flash to turnoff macro and DCP. You might look on ebay for one that has been flashed. Mainly Apex models, some Daewoo.
Any black box you buy should also turnoff DCP in addition to macrovision, the low end boxes really don't work with DVD to VHS.

It should be pointed out that Macrovision on a DVD is simply a flag that tells the player to add the Macrovision signal to the analog outputs. DVD ripping software turns off that flag so that players don't add the Macrovosion signal.

Of course, if you're going to rip a DVD there's no reason to bother with analog outputs.
