  1. I just used this fabulous program for the first time. My question is this. I ripped the DVD to my hard drive using DVD Decrypter and then opened AutoGK. I selected all the right info and then selected to convert to 1 CD (700MB). THe file that was created ended up being only 360MB with pretty poor quality. I then retried it and selcted 2 CD's and the resulting file was 680MB. Why is it not converting to the proper file size? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Hello,

You can use a video bit rate calculator to help determine file size. The larger the bitrate equals a larger file size.

    Use one found here

  3. I realize that I could use a bitrate calculator, but I assumed that when you select 1 CD it would maximize the bitrate to fit 700MB on the CD, and maximize the bitrate to fill 2CD's if you select 2 CD's.

  5. Which version of Auto Gk are you using? The latest version is 1.54b (beta). I've never, ever had the program create anything other than the file size I've specified, *unless* I have accidently switched it top quality based. Check and see if this is the problem (doesn't sound like it form what you say), or perhaps upgrade your version.

I typically back up my movies to 700 mb, although occasionally I go for 1 Gb, or 1800 mb for the LOTR. For backing up my Gilligan's Island, I use 175 mb.

  6. I am using 1.54beta. I will check at home to see what the quality rating is. I will also try another DVD and see what happens. Thanks for the advice.

  7. I don't know if I was being too helpful; just trying to point out some of the things that *I* screwed up learning this program

I did try backing up one 50 minute tv episode using 75% quality > 2 gb.Cut it down to 60% and still about 1 gb. Cut it down to 50% and still too big (I was aiming for 300 mb).

Question; is Auto Gk making one or two passes when encoding; if 2 passes, then you are going for a specific size, and something is screwed up. If one pass, then you are going for quality based, and you should switch to specific size.

Note: I just fired up the program, and found that if you select a specific file size, and then select quality based, the specific file size is still shown, albeit greyed out, and the unpredictable quality based one pass encoding takes over. Maybe this is what is happening?

    Let me know what happens.
