  1. This is the problem -- I have a firewire port (IEEE 1394) and a Panasonic PV-DV953 camcorder. I connect the cam to the port and my windows XP detects it so I think there's no prb with that, but when I open Movie Maker or Adobe Premier PRO 7.0 and try to capture, both software's freezes and stops responding. I have tried other video software's also and got the same problem. Can anyone advice??? Thanks

  2. you might try and use the free program from WinDV http://windv.mourek.cz/

It does not install, but runs direct from the .exe file - so the capture is independent from any editing software.

Then import the .avi file to your editing program.

Might be worth a try - and it is free, so nothing lost!

    Hi there,
I seem to have exactly the same problem as you and it's driving me crazy. I have a Canon camcorder, which both Videostudio and Windows Movie maker both recognise fine. Then if I try to ffw, rw, play or capture it might do the first action but then freezes and rarely captures anythng at all.
Did you manage to solve the problem. I'm posting another request for help if you want to keep an eye on it too.

    Thanks

    Chris

Have you updated to SP2, if so see this thread. https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=236081

Thanks for the help. I have indeed ungraded to sp2 (fool), though I'm sure i had this problem before as well. I tried everything you suggested in the thread you highlighted, but no luck. One problem for me is I can't remove sp2 but that's another story (tried all the system restore and add/remove progs, but dregs of it still remain. I had a bad installation f it first time round which seems to prevent me from completely removing it.

I am just going to post a request to see if anybody lives close to me and is kind enough to let me try my cam on their computer (don't live near sheffield do you). Unfortunately I'm ahead of the game with my friend-set when it comes to camcorders/dvds so nobody I can eliminate problems with.

Thanks again, I'll keep searching for solutions.
