Problem: Backed up DVDs will occasionally lose synch... the movie might pause for a 3 seconds and all of a sudden be 10 seconds later in the movie.
Hardware: liteon 811s using RiData DVD+R 8x media @ 8x burn rate, playing on a Philips DVP642. I have not upgraded the firmware since I bought the unit a week or two ago.
Software: DVD Shrink, latest version
The movie will just freeze (video and audio) and all of a sudden jumps to a spot 10 seconds later in the movie. I think even once or twice the entire player has "reset" itself during one of these hiccups.
My thoughts: Is it bad media? The burns seem to process completely smooth. Do I need to upgrade firmware in 642? I usually browse the internet and stuff while DVDs are backing up. Does this multitasking harm the DVD process?

Try burning the same avi again. If it loses synch in exactly the same place, then you know it has nothing to do with burning or media, but rather is related to a corrupted audio or video stream, or a muxing problem.

I just got the player myself recently and haven't hit that problem. It had some issues with a couple of avi with mp3 vbr audio. I converted them to cbr and they play great.
There is a way to check your firmware version.
Leave the tray open and press each number in sequence 5 6 9 0 and then press ok. It should list some info about the player and its firmware. Don't change anything unless you read all the info on the Philips site first.
