For some reason, this DVD player doesn't like Disney/Pixar DVDs; I assume they have some sort of protection that the player doesn't understand.
Two examples are DVDs of the movies Chicken Little and Cars: everything seems fine when you put these discs in, until you press "Play"; then, all of a sudden, the LED readout on the player shows strange characters, and the player just freezes and does nothing, to the point where you have to pull the power plug on the unit if you want to open the disc tray again.
One workaround seems to be to use scene selection to choose the second chapter (not the first) and watch the movie from there. But that's kind of annoying, especially when these discs are store-bought originals.
