  1. Hi everyone,

This is probably a silly question but I am thinking of buying a pal dvd player on my next trip to Europe, so I am wondering if it will work with my television in Canada.
I have heard that european pal dvd players can play both ntsc and pal dvd discs, but should I have a compatible tv set?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello,

Your best bet would be to buy a multiregion player that specifically plays ntsc AND pal. Just check the label on the box, that will tell you.

  3. I have a PAL/NTSC dvd player and a PAL/NTSC TV set, when a NTSC file is being played, the TV automatically switches over to NTSC. So if you have a PAL/NTSC dvd player it'll play NTSC video fine on an NTSC tv set, but no PAL.
Hope it's not too confusing, if you want to be able to play both PAL and NTSC you need a DVD-player and a TV that are PAL and NTSC capable...

Or, you just need a DVD Player with selectable PAL/NTSC output.

hmm, I think that is what I have, but the TV follows the selection of the DVD; the TV automatically goes into NTSC mode when NTSC is selected.
I also have a PAL only TV, and the screen goes blank (audio only) when I select NTSC in the DVD-player menu.
Dunno if this is what you meant by a selectable PAL/NTSC output?

No, raffie. I meant that you select the type of DVD output in a player menu:
If you select PAL, it outputs PAL (for PAL TV).
If you select NTSC, it outputs NTSC (for NTSC TV).
All this, regardless of the type of video in your disk source.

  7. Very few European DVD players will convert PAL discs to NTSC output. The reason for this is that multistandard TV's are common in europe so there is rarely a need to do this particular conversion. What many will do is convert NTSC to PAL-60 (Pal signals but a 30fps).

So if you a buy a DVD player in europe, and can handle the different power supply issues (240V vs 110V), the chances of finding one that will play PAL disks on a NTSC only TV are probably quite small. Playing NTSC disks should be no problem.

(Is Canada 110V same as US?)
