Is there any reason why you can't buy a decent printer and do them yourself ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

    $200 on a printer

    OR

$200 to a forum member to print you, say, 100 DVD covers

I know which one is the smart option.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Buy a $50 printer and they'll come out fine.

Or you could send them to me and I'll print them. $5 each, plus shipping.

Seriously, you could even take stuff to Kinko's or any copy place and have them done cheap. They've entered the digital age, so it's no problem.

I am pretty sure Kinkos will not print DVD covers for you... Has to do with copyright laws... We took some pictures to walmart and copyed them on their kodak machine. When I got to the line to check out, they would not sell them to me. I was P.O.! Pretty sure the same thing has to apply their

Actually, I've done it. I meant "have them done (by you) cheap". You can do it yourself and even use your own paper. They have no right to see what you've copied. I've used them for court documents too, when I was in a bind (for a copier, not the court thing )

Would it or would it not end up being cheaper in the long run if you were to purchase an el-cheapo printer and DIY ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

I print all my own covers and have used everything from a terribly slow Epson ($39) to an HP Photosmart 7760 ($179 or so). My favorite that I'm using now is an HP Officejet G85 All-In-One. The covers come out great in my opinion.

I use HP 44LB Brochure Paper (Glossy, dual side print). A 150 sheet pack goes for around $25.

cracku, the G85 is discontinued now but originally started out as an over-priced $500 All-In-One. I picked it up a couple of years ago for around $230. Refurbed ones go for $199 or less. Ink is just like all HP cartridge rip-offs. Unless your refilling your own, a set of cartridges goes for about $55.

I have not calculated how much it costs me per cover to print but I would guess no more than 35 to 40 cents.

Get a Epson R-200 for about $70.00 just about anywhere and it comes with a complete set of cartrigdes (replacement carts. are about $11-$15 each) that way you can print very good inserts and disk labels also.

    true

how many inserts can you get out of one fill of each ink?
    Quote Quote
  23. Ok, from a guy that just did about 1,000 color flyers awhile back, plus about 1,000 show tickets individually numbered and coded for each performance too. Plus all the other NORMAL full color printing we do, like about 50-200 pages a week, sometimes alot more, once in a while very little, like if we're not home that week!

Buy a Canon I850 printer or similar!!
Seperate ink tanks for each color! That is very important! The Canons are even clear so you can actually see the ink level, foam insert in part of the cartrig and actuall liquid tank to the side. You can SEE how much ink you have just by looking. Easiest cartrig I ever refilled and I refilled plenty!

Printer is four color, Black, Cyan, Mangenta, Yellow and is far faster than my epson R200. The Epson R200 is a six color printer, it has light cyan and light magenta, but the print quality between the Canon and R200 are very very close. I only use the R200 to print my disks, but when I first bought it I did test printing with photo's to see which was better for those really detailed best quality prints. It was so close I don't remember if there was any difference at all, but I do know I decided to print everything except disks with the I850. Only reason I don't use it for disk printing too is it does not print disks
And disks are the only thing I will print with the R200!

I bought my Canon I850 when they first came out well over a year ago, maybe closer to 1 1/2-2yrs? It cost me about $150 then, should be alot less now. I actually liked it so well when I started using it within 2 weeks I went back and bought another for a spare in case this one broke. I had been burning out printers pretty fast.
Never had a problem in all this time, and I mean we work this thing too!!
Finally earlier this year I set up a private office in town and am using the spare I850 there.

I never actually bought a cartrig for it with all the printing we do here. Normally when I get a printer I like I buy extra set of cartriges so I am using one set and have the other set refilled ready to swap out. This printer is refilled so easy I never bought that second set!! I just refill as needed or when they look low and I have extra time and feel like it.
Good quality ink is CHEAP! Cartrigs are not, about $8-$10 each I think, I checked prices a few times but never bought them. The cartriges last a good long time, but of course that depends how much you print and the amount of color to a page and so forth. Still if you buy cartrigs instead of refilling, it's not anymore expensive than HP, actually far less since you only replace the color you run out of, not an all in one type tank where you through away alot of ink like the Hp's and Lexmarks I've had. That's very important! Like I use almost twice as much yellow as any other color. That mean's if I was replacing those $30 all in one type tanks I would be throwing away half the red and blue ink I bought! This way I only replace the yellow cartrige for about $10 or less, but I don't even replace that since I refill it.

I did buy one set a few months ago, but that was just because I ran out of black ink for refilling. Quality ink is cheap, but so is cheap junk ink, I had one of those universal refill kits here and made the mistake of using the black from it. Though it did not hurt anything, the prints were garbage and I needed black ink right away. Sams Club sells the cartrigs as a set and are the cheapest store to buy from, I think it might have been around $25-$30 for the set of 4, real Canon cartriges. I had to buy carts for the Epson 1520 same time and really forget the exact prices now. Anyway I used the new black cartrig a fews days untill my fresh order of ink arrived, then I sealed that cartrig back up and put it away, so really I am still using the tanks that came with the printer, after many many 1,000's of pages!! And I have no problems with the heads or anything else. Matter of fact I really can't remember ever having to run the head cleaning much either except when I was blowing out the junk ink I had tried.

Take the I850 and some good low cost photo paper and make all the covers you want for CHEAP. Paper costs more than the inks if your refilling!! I have gotten exellent covers for my jackets using plain card stock! Also plain paper. I have gotten near photo quality on plain inkjet paper for photos. Royal Brites glossy papers work pretty good too and aren't too high. I think I paid about $15-$20 for a pack of 200 at Sams Club, they also have Matt and others. Prices vary alot on what you buy, but you can get what ever you want to use.

Most often all any of this premade stuff is is just normal 8.5 X11 precut perferated papers anyway so why pay the high prices for it? Just grab high quality stock of what ever type you need and cut your own instead of useing the perferated punchouts! Just like business cards, why pay $5-$10 for a few sheets of card stock perferated when you can get 150-200 sheets for $5?
A nice paper slicer for about $30 comes in handy for long straight cuts. So if your gonna do volume buy the slicer for profesional results then use normal paper stock and cut your own.

For not much money you should be able to get set up to do professional looking jackets and whatevers.

If your wondering why I do so much printing, 1,000s of pages like this, I do pinback buttons. I use the I850 for printing my designs and I sell to State Parks, businesses, bands, ect... so ya, I ain't kiding when I say we work this printer to death, and it still prints like brand new!!
I also print lots of odd stuff like 1,000 color flyers for a play to be posted all over the place awhile back. Most on plain paper, a few hundred was cardstock, and a few for specail places on photo paper, plus the tickets.

In one year alone I went through 2 Hp cheapo printers and a Xerox printer, plus some other printer I don't even remember what it was! This is the longest any printer has lasted me, the cheapest to operate, and the best quality prints on any type of media. Plus the easiest to refill!

Also I do print a few T-shirt transfers, great for those too.

  24. crackuer,
If you already have the original inserts, you don't need a printer ! And by the way, yuo would also need a scanner or a multi-function printer.

All you need to do is go to your local Kinko's and make color copies (laser). Kinko's is self-service so don't worry about the guy refusing to copy them for you because of copyright issues...
Also, you can get whatever paper you want as long as it feeds in the copier. Ask for some glossy double sided paper and it will do it.
A color laser copy should go for less than a buck. It might be slightly more expensive with the special paper.
