Wouldn't it be possible for me to buy a vonage service with my US credit card and US postal address and then take the equipment to japan and and techincally make local calls to people back home and calls to me would be local, even though i am half a world away?

Not only is Thayne correct, I think that Vonage actually encourages this in their advertising.
Basically, it should work anywhere on the planet that has a high speed broadband connection. I don't think it'd work too well on dial-up, though. Especially overseas. Or maybe it doesn't work on dial-up at all, FAIK.
I've toyed with the idea of signing up with it myself. However, I may be getting rid of my high speed internet access in the next couple of months when my 15-month special deal runs out and the price increases dramatically (unless they offer to extend the deal).
From what I've read, most people with Vonage are MOL happy with the service. Unlimited calling for next to nothing - a pretty good deal.Ethernet (n): something used to catch the etherbunny -
I have a co worker who uses some service much like this much the very same way to stay in touch with his wife over seas. The service is linked to a US address and the phone overseas.
