i got a Pentium 4 2.0Gig(processor speed) computer and i plan to back up some of my DVDs to VCD, how many hour will it take to convert for example the movie "Paycheck" (DVD format) to a VCD?

which programs can do the job the fastest?
i don't care about the price of the softwares as long as they are fast...

  2. I havn't made VCD for a while. It shouldn't take too long. CCE is pretty fast and is recommended by a lot of folks here. I don't know if it will take a MPEG-2 source though....

    Hello,
It took HOURS to encode to vcd on my AMD 850mhz pc. I have to imagine a 2ghz will be much faster. Just remember though, it will take time. My personal guess would to allow at LEAST twice as long as the source time (ie 4 hours for a 2 hour video). I could be wrong.

Your other option is to use a capture card that removes macrovision and do a real time capture to vcd. That would be easier I think. Of course you have to hook up your standalone dvd player to the pc (or another pc with a tv output- that has a macrovision hack to allow tv out for dvds of course).

EazyVCD is one of the easiest noobish-type programs to do the job. It typically used to take me about 2-2½X runtime to do the job from go to woe.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Wel looks like my double run time estimate was right on the money for a 3ghz pc

    Yeah I know, my bad

I stopped doing VCD about 12 months ago. It coincided with the purchase of my DVD burner.

I have since upgraded the PC to a P4 3.06B, new mobo and added 512MB RAM, configured dual channel now.

    Beast !
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Hello,
jimmalenko - What a system! I'm hoping to upgrade sometime in the next year or so.

d_unbeliever- Have you considered upgrading to a dvd burner? If you have one it's a LOT easier to backup to dvd than converting to vcd. Hope this helps.

DVD --> VCD = about 4-6 hours = mediocre quality

DVD --> DVDR = ½-1 hour = clone of the original

I know which one I would choose.
    If in doubt, Google it.

CAREFUL! I know there are videohelp members out there who would tear that statement apart. They'd say "near original".

Personally I can't tell the difference of a shrink. Also, a dvd5 single layer WILL be an exact clone. Just thought I'd point that out before somebody else jumped on it

    I don't give a bat's clacker about those people

My post is my opinion and my opinion only. I do not claim it to be fact unless I preceed the statement with "FACT:..."

With a DVD burner about $50 and decent DVDs about 35 cents, why would you want to?

I take it from your price quotes that you meant to say "why WOULDN'T you want to".

  15. Well, either "why would you want to do a DVD to VCD conversion" or "why wouldn't you want to buy a DVD burner".. I think lordsmurf meant the first (and it actually makes slightly more sense).

In regards to a DVD-9 conversion to DVD-5 not being a clone.. well, of course it isn't. It is a moot point, however, since the quality will be head-and-shoulders better than a video CD..
