Long time reader, first time poster, but not a newbie.
I received the Band of Brothers box set for my birthday and would like to back them up to DVDr. Each disc holds two episodes with menus and some have extras. I just want to backup one episode per disc with no menus or extras, just the episode. None of the extraction tools I've used, including 0Sex, DVDBackup, andMTR, seem to recognize seperate titles for each episode. However, the Apple DVD Player info window clearly shows that each episode is a seperate title. All I want to do is rip the episode with the DTS audio track (there are several audio tracks and subtitles), nothing else. DVD2oneX *DOES* recognize seperate titles and tracks but it's not a ripping tool, and besides, I don't want to recompress it since each episode is under 4 GB.
Anyway, I suppose the point is moot now, since I used my girlfriends PC and DVDShrink. DVDShrink was able to extract what I wanted into a usable VIDEO_TS folder. Sure wish there was something like that for Mac. Unless I'm missing something, is there?

There is. You have to rip the entire disc entact to an unencrypted version before DVD2OneX can do what you wish. Mac tools such as DVD2OneX require unencrypted content to work as to avoid the DMCA and other ridiculous laws worldwide. PC tools often include software to decrypt DVDs because those dudes have steel balls not known to Mac software developers ...

Oh dear me....
Im sitting here with B.O.B ( disk 4 ) in my drive , and have MTR 2.0 open on my desktop....
Try clicking MODE...
TITLE ONLY EXTRACTION,
then select the title you wish from th popup below , in this case , I can select the two titles that make up the 2 episodes , and an extra title that is the menus...
if you dont know which are the films , check the file size in the upper display , largets is normaly the feature(s)
here is a pic
althou you will have to demux / remux to generate the VTS.vobs for basic menu system.
hmmmm piccy is not working today!!! -
Thank you for the quick responses!
AntnyMD: I understand how to use DVD2OneX, I only meant to point out that it is the only program that recognizes the seperate titles, audio tracks, and subtitles, and will allow you to choose only what you want to keep. I already tried to use it on a de-crypted disc image, but it *appears* to re-compress, even though the source is only about 3.5Gb. I can not find any documentation to explain if DVD2OneX re-compresses or not. If it doesn't, then my problems are solved.
pixeljammedia: It appears I misspoke. OSex DOES in fact recognize seperate titles and tracks, etc. I'm so used to using full disc mode that I forgot that it can extract in other formats. However, when extracting in other formats you are left with an un-authored mpg or a/v streams. Toast will burn it but then you're stuck with Toasts lousy version of a menu. This (to me) is merely trading one problem for another. And tried Yade, found it VERY cryptic. I was able to save a disc image but didn't understand how to do anything else with it.

geezerbuttz!!!! MTR is yours, isn't it? Thank you very much for popping into my little thread.
Disc 4 is at my GF's house right now. I have disc 5 though.
I click MODE.
TITLE ONLY EXTRACTION.
Title 01 (Ch 07) (Angl1) (MF) 6.34 GB
Title 02 (Ch 07) (Angl1) 3.27 GB
Title 03 (Ch 01) (Angl1) 05 K
Title 04 (Ch 02) (Angl1) 12.77 MB
Title 1 appears to be BOTH episodes (don't know what MF is). Title 2 appears to be exactly what it should be, episode 2. Titles 3 and 4 are probably menus. I don't see an option to NOT extract the extra audio tracks or subtitles.
Am I missing something? I hope I am.
Also, I'm not looking to create a menu. I just want to pop it in and have it play. -
ok, your disk 5 is authored dif to my disk 5......
mine is like this!!!!
title 01 (Ch 06) (Ang 1) (MF) 2.48 GB
title 02 (Ch 06) (Ang 1) 2.66 GB
title 03 (Ch 01) (Ang 1) 7.05 MB
so as we can see , the episodes will be title 1 , and title 2 , and the menu is title 3
MF = Main Feature , MTR makes a good guess at what the MainFeat is for the user to extract Movie Only.
MTR does not demux the streams , so audio extraction , and subtitle extraction is not avail, so you didnt miss anything there. May be i will add it in 2.1 if there is enough demand.
I cant see how t 01 can be 6.34GB and 7 chaps , while t 02 is 3.27 GB and 7 chaps.... thats aproox 9.6 GB , thats right on the dvd size limit. ( single side , dual layer )
Of course , the disk might be fibbing about the size of title 01 , try extracting it and see what happend , failing that....
test this.....
put MTR into Title Chapter Extraction
Select title 01
Look at the Start Chapter and End Chapter popups , and play with extracting individual chapters untill you find the chapter that breaks between the episodes...
I would like you to post your results here so i can see whats going on
Also where are you located , and where did you get the box set of BOB from. Is it in the metal Case? , or , is it the soft card case edition?
hope it helps a little.
About MTR. I am currently sitting on 2.0.1 , waiting for WiseWeasel to come back from Vacation tohost and Post.
2.1 is in the works , but i have decided to hold back on release untill i can get Xcode 2.0 , so i can ring as much speed out of it as pos.
Cheers

hey geez, been a while since I checked back, sorry 'bout that.
Anyway, title-chapter-extraction worked fine to rip just the episode that I wanted. My BOB set isn't the metal case version, that would have been too cool. And yes, it does seem to be authored differently, how odd.
However, I have it all backed up now by using DVDShrink on my gf's Wiintel. I REALLY like it's ability to eliminate the extra tracks and junk during the ripping process.
Thanks for your help. MTR is my new best ripping friend on the Mac side. Can't wait for 2.1.
