Yes I know, they are essentially the same thing (by the same guy). But I have seen some differences in quality with certain movies. What are your guys opinions on the two programs? Which one do you think turns out better picture quality results or do you think they are identical?

It would be best to use the one you think works best.

I think DVD Shrink is ok with certain movies, but it's not my first choice when it comes to DVD-9 to DVD-5 programs. I have heard that Nero Recode produces better results, but I haven't used Recode in a very long time. Just wanted to get some opinions before trying it again.

That's interesting. I would have thought it was the other way round.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I haven't used DVD Shrink 3.2 to transcode anything yet, but 3.17 was slightly inferior to Recode quality wise, and not as good for removing bits and pieces while keeping the menu intact. Now that Shrink has this functionality, and a definate price advantage, I'd take Shrink over Recode.

I have been using Shrink 3.2 in reauthor mode to extract just the movie for re-encoding using DVD Rebuilder with CCE. Shrink 3.2 is much fast during the initial analysis, and by telling it the destination is a DL disc, I can grab an entire movie, regardless of size, without any transcoding by Shrink.

Quality is very subjective. Only you can decide what looks good to you.

You could always do that, just choose 'no compression' from the git go.

  9. If you can (and you say you can) see quality difference betwen recode and shrink and want the best quality, then dont use any of them, any method using CCE will be better for those movies. I use shrink only (or mostly) for not important things, like movies for kids and so on, i imagine they have interest in the extras when they get old enoguh. The last backup i did with shrink was Ice Age, which is stuffed with potentially interesting extras.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the new version of Recode supposedly
with improved quality (update info thanks to DVDRFreak )

I wonder how they managed that?

They do mention that they haven't used it since the "Ice Age" - joke

Read the comparisons with CCE for both apps.
They are in the tool section

  12. I've never used Nero Recode but I'm very impressed with DVDShrink v.3.2.0.15 using AEC,with previous versions of DVDShrink I would only go as low as 70% but the new version I went as low as 55%.
