How does it do with CD-RW media? I have a 107D and it's SLOW....

Well specs say 30X I think.
Only burned one cd as a test and that was at 20X worked ok for me.
Personally prefer to use a cd burner for cd's. Why no reason other than i have a cd burner in my system and it seems a wate not to use it...

I voted for the 3500 since I own one. I was debating whether or not to get the retail version of the Pioneer drive (A08) or the 3500. However, after reading the review on the 108 on Anandtech and seeing how the 108 uses an NEC chipset...I'm even more confused! Well, either way you can't go wrong.

  6. I have the 3500. It is a very quiet drive, is not media picky, and so far burns all my media at the correct speeds all the way up to 8X.

If you need the booksetting option, then there is no choice at all. A booksetting option just became available for the Nec 3500, and probably never will be available for the Pioneer 108.

  9. NEC 3500A

FYI, there is a new (hacked) firmware that allows single layer bitsetting.

Check Herrie's site or the Dangerous Brothers.

  10. I think the NEC ND3500AG is the better of the 2 because of the write quality

    Doubt what?

Pioneer will never make a bitsetting firmware for SL DVD+R as they have no interest in making DVD+R more compatible. The Pioneer patchers at RPC1.org are also too biased against DVD+R to even have look at it although I doubt they would be able to add it even if they wanted as it's way more complex than removing limitations like region protection.

The bitsetting firmware (both SL and DL DVD+R) for the ND-3500A is available here: http://tdb.rpc1.org/#ND3500A
