The first time I connected my Sony DCRHC30 MiniDV to my pc via firewire I smell the burning smell. So I fried my firewire port on the camcorder.
Its in techinical service and I guess its gonna take forever to get it fixed.
How can I be sure that this will not happen again ?

My camcorder said to connect cables first and then turn on power to camera or risk damaging the port. Not sure if that's what happened to you... did you have the camera on when you connected the cable?

The usual reason for a fried Firewire port on the camcorders end is the use of a 4 to 6 pin cable. If you use a 4 to 4 cable, you can't fry your port, there's no power line in the 4 pin connector, whereas the 6 pin has a power line that with a bad cable, broken wire or miswired pc port, results in an expensive repair of your camcorder.
Have a nice day :)
