Thanks to this site, and several hours of research, I am ready to back up my first DVD movie onto DVD-R. However, I am unclear on one point. I have a DVD ROM and a CDRW 24-10-40. Do I need a DVD writer to do the back up or is my kit sufficient?![]()

Thanks in advance.

Well, if you think your CD-RW can burn onto DVD-R media, then by all means feel free to try it, but I think you'll be disappointed.
Please, think a question through before asking it! -
You can backup to VCD or SVCD with a CDRW, but not DVDr, you need a DVD burner for that.

Thanks for your help bugster.
Gurm. I do not need you to lecture me about thinking through my question. If I had known the answer I would not have asked the question in the first place. It's arrogant know -alls like you that make posting on forums like these a pain. These forums are for people like me to get advice on issues I am unsure of. I asked the question and got the answer. The fact you were unable to answer the question shows your ignorance and I suggest in future if you cannot make a positive contribution you keep your mouth shut. -
Baz63,
These forums are NOT just for people like you to get advice on issues you are unsure of. They are for people to gather and talk about issues related to video and audio. Don't think we are here to serve you.
The reason Gurm made a joke is because anyone with brain one (ie searched anything on this site or others) would know you need a DVD burner to burn DVDs.
Lastly, do you know how stupid people look when they try to be a forum tough guy by writing up something then adds a stupid little smiley because he is afraid someone might actually be offended?

You know, I'm going to have to side with the newbie. Sure, his/her question was seemed elementary, but to him/her, I don't think so. I know of several people who do not get the whole needing a dvd burner to back up dvds. I also know several people who didn't realize you couldn't put a blank cd in regular cd-rom drive and copy to it. It's not something many people put much thought toward in everyday thoughts. Kudos to the newbie for only asking one ridiculous question and not simply asking... How do I back up a dvd?
As far as Gurm goes... 90% of the posts I've seen from him aren't very helpful. Mostly antagonistic... Of course, I can't really say much, as I am quite guilty of this myself. -
@smearbrick1
Not siding with Gurm, mostly I think that I am helpful on the forums, but come on. Of all of these people you know that don't know anything about DVD burning, how many of them are registered and posting on this forum? Also, how many of them would still be this unaware after "several hours of research"?
Call a spade a spade, there is such a thing as a stupid question.

Questions such as "can my cd-rw burn dvds" shouldn't really be asked in the first place. All it takes is a little research on the forums, basically most of the information needed has already been answered. there are guides, articles and a whole wealth of information on the left to read. it just goes to show how much effort someone has put it their research.
Now for example, all i do is access the guide for the required info and i see:
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/94288.php
What format shall I choose then, VCD, SVCD or DVD?
If you want the best video quality, but note that the video quality depends on how good the source video is - Garbage in Garbage out, you should choose DVD . A DVD can hold about 2 hours video with great video quality and if you choose to lower the video quality a bit you can store several(3-6) hours on one single DVD. DVD requires a DVD Writer but remember that you can replace your old CD Rewriter because all DVD Writers can burn CDs also. Before you buy a DVD Writer be sure to check that your standalone DVD Player supports DVD-R/W or DVD+R/W in our DVD Player list.
I dont mean any offence to anyone, just asking questions like "can a cdrw burn dvds" is just like asking "does 2+2=5"
again, sorry if i offended anyone -
I'll jump on the side of the new guy here, and reiterate that we were all newbies once, and with differing degrees of expertise. I'll also add that you can easily back up a DVD without a DVD writer, as long as you have a CD burner, and don't mind spanning your DVD backup as rar files over several CDs.
1) DVD Decryptor or DVD Shrink
2) Winrar
Thats it. Of course you can't play the files, but your DVD *is* backed up.

Hello,
Thomas Davie - if the writer had asked just how to backup dvd this wouldn't have started. He/she wrote dvd-r from cdburner - that's a no-no. I agree we all start somewhere. And there are stupid questions. Let's cut the guy some slack and get off the topic.

So, wait a second here... does this mean my floppy drive will NOT burn a DVD-R but WILL burn a DVD+RW??? That's what I was under the impression of. I don't get it! PLEASE HELP!!!

You can also use a codec like xvid or divx to back up a dvd to cd, but these will only play of certain stand alone players or a computer. But you can usually fit an entire film on 1 CD.
-
Not again! Wasnt this question raised just a few days ago. How about a sticky that says "You got'ta have a DVD burner to make DVDs"
Good grief! -
Although I jumped on the side of the Newbie, I do see gurm's point. I don't necessarily agree with the method used to make said point, but I also see the newbie side too. Before I joined this forum, I researched everything I possibly could to become more informed about video. I've always been a bit computer savvy, but dvd-video/vcd/svcd was all new territory. In my tenure as registered user of this forum, I may have asked, for my personal information, maybe a handful of questions. This is only because I feel that when you complete a project utilizing knowledge you obtained by yourself (through reading/trial and error) that you can really enjoy the results of your efforts. Not only that, it allows you to become more familiar with the task at hand rather than reading a guide everytime you want something done. (Not a big fan of guides and directions) Point is: everyone gets things differently. I used one or two guides to learn how to create vcd/svcd video and no guides for dvd backup (except that damned IFOedit)... someone else may need 10 guides and a whole pant load of forum questions. Everyone learns differently and in different ways.

why don't you know it alls get off your high horse once in a while?
who honestly gives a flying fooook (Avid doing Mel B) if someone asks the stupidest of questions like how to put a DVD into the tray?
the issue that always arises in these situations is the shitty attitudes of some people here that just love questions like this. It's as if they seem to get a kick out of flaming the newbies or get offended by these stupid questions and feel the need to reply as if it's a drug
the forum may sometimes have 'stupid' questions but it's also full of stupid replies. Is it that hard to click BACK on the browser and just ignore the thread when you think a thread is just a waste of time and space?
why don't you just ACCEPT the fact that there will always be questions like this so CONSTANTLY moaning about it isn't going to change anything is it? and it just shows others you pathetic attitude to those new to the scene. Why not try to cut out the 'I'm a clever shite' business and try to be more helpful or just ignore it as that's the aim of these forums. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of members would rather have it that way and if you want to moan about newbies etc then do it in the off topic forum
take out most of the shite in this forum and it's one of the best but 'knowing it all' doesn't give you the right to a pathetic attitude to others
c'mon people 'grow up' and be more civilised to others without boosting your ego's by taking advantage of their lack of knowledge or stupidity
in fact you call me stupid and lazy for asking this then as I don't know the answer but I can't be bothered to look for it at the moment and maybe someone knows. I have burnt DVD files onto a CD making a mini DVD but I used a DVD burner. Could you not burn those same files via a CD burner instead of using a DVD burner? Obviously it's not a DVD but it's DVD files ain't it? -

My two cents:
When I first became interested in DVD burning, I was so clueless that I went out and unkowingly purchased a DVD writer that was plus format only. However, I at least knew that I needed a DVD burner to write to a DVD R!
I think the author of this post is an idiot. If God had intended us not to masturbate he would've made our arms shorter.

The only point I have been trying to make is that no one could "research for hours" and still come up thinking you could burn a DVD in a CD burner.
I guess I am arguing that anybody can just paste "I searched the forum, but didn't find anything" before posting their lazyass post and these posts are overrunning the board.
Other than that I agree this post has gone way OT.

Here's another $0.02 worth, and feel free to return any change you feel I am due. Having reread the AUP, there is a general rule stating "Please try to do some basic research before posting. " While I'm sure this is there for this exact reason, the rule does not state "You must perform a search before every post." Maybe it should, but that's for Baldrick to decide.
Forums are for everyone's use, newbie and experienced alike. That is also why there are newbie and advanced forums. If this type of post bothers you, perhaps you need to graduate to the advanced forums. Otherwise, you are trolling!
If the forums are "flooded" with this type of post, then perhaps there are many more newbies here than ever before. This is not a bad thing! If you don't like the post, ignore it! Maybe someone who was a newbie last week will answer it, and spare you having to lower your intellectual standards to do so yourself.
If you really have the need to bash someone, come over to Off Topic, there's plenty to go around! We live for it! -
@tekkieman,
your comments are worth a lot more than $0.02 -

Can I burn DVD-Rs in my CD-RW drive?
