...and just to jack your thread a little....

Of those doing it, are any of you using SBC DSL? I hear they don't allow it, but I'd like to try.

    Sorry Treebeard. Back to you.

Did both, alone with my own mail and newsgroup server.
I just got tired of trying to keep the hackers at bay.

Ran it off of DSL and cable.

If you plan to, make sure you setup the NTFS permission very strick!

Did it before using both, but that's how my crappy computer first became a crappy computer. Kept getting virus' and hacks. I used that computer without a firewall just for the sole purpose of finding out wether I could visit sites or do things without getting infected. If it got infected, I wouldn't visit the site or download using any of my other comps.

I run a lot of my own services at home, including a web server. I've always used Apache - it's easy to configure, has an excellent security history, and it's free.

    Yes but not externally
my ISP block incoming web ports (80,8080,ftp,smtp,etc) and has a removal from network policy if you break that...
However I have an internal server for web development
    Win2K, IIS 5, MS SQL 2000
All sits behind my firewall safe and sound

You should run everything behind a firewall. That does away with most of that shit...

I did once run a Web server and FTP won't work due to being behind a firewall here at home.

Anyway, my websites and mail are hosted on an outside server and this as much better and safer for me.

A normal firewall wouldn't normally cover 100% the protection on a computer or server running IIS.

The firewall you know of it is normally for the PC and not for a server.

Norton's NIS won't protect it enough as I know this by experience.

There is no real protection unless upgrading to some kind of special 'business or enterprise’ software for the server from the AntiVirus and Firewall Co.

This extra AntiVirus and Firewall protection can be expensive? Too much money?

No, you block all ports but those you need. On my server I only have web and email ports open to the outside and along with anti-viruse software I have never had any problems.

  15. ports/firewalls/anti virus means very little if you do not secure the file system and the service/daemon.....

What do you mean, I run NTFS.....

Now look to see who has rights to the root of each drive?
Are the inherited rights all the way down?
Did you setup common dumby accounts (honey pots)?
Now what about the service you're running, is it secure?

just some thoughts if you're planning to join the life of a network/systems admin

Sometimes I try and let it have a virus, just to see what it does. I wouldn't be able to do that with a firewall activated. My crappy comp is for the sole purpose of running without a firewall as well as other things. You don't actually think I run any of my other systems without a firewal, do you?
