  1. Dear all, have been burning some AVI files to DVD-R with mixed success, some are ok, whilst others have intermitent jerkiness on 'panning shots' aswell as the DVD suddenly stopping to play, my DVD player (Sony DVPNS400) also sounds like its working overtime to read the discs, ive rarely burnt one that plays all the way through without a hitch.

Has anyone else had any problems with these discs? Can anyone shed any light on improving playback! Ive noticed that media can be an issue thats why ive posted here

    Many Thanks.

  2. Hi,

A few questions for you based around my frustrations with various discs.

    What speed are the discs?
What make and model is your writer/burner?
What speed are you burning at?
Where did you purchase (a link is good if possible)
Does disc play alright in your computer?

I had some Optodiscs -R from blankdiscshop.co.uk and they played ok on my computer but when i put them in my dvd player (Yakamo DL2) they played back very badly with skipping etc... I solved the problem by switching to 4x discs and burning at 2x.

  3. Hi, in relation to your questions, here are the answers!

What speed are the discs? 4X DVD-R
What make and model is your writer/burner? Toshiba DVD-R SD-R5112
What speed are you burning at? Tried various 1X 2X and 4X
Where did you purchase (a link is good if possible) Both DVD Media and Burner from Ebuyer.co.uk
Does disc play alright in your computer? plays ok but still stutters primarily on panning shots (as does the DVD player)

Look forward to hearing anyones thoughts on my annoying little problem!
    Cheers.

  4. Your AVIs play OK without being put on to disc?
Have you tried converting your AVIs to MPEG 2 format to see if they produces better results?
Creating proper DVDs might be a better way to get results.
Also is your stutting near the end of the disc - if so then it is usually the mark of a bad disc.
Try some different media: I use Bulkpaq ProdiscSO3 from www.ukdvdr.co.uk

    Yep,

I've had all those problems with that media, I burn 2 movies to a single DVD, and near the end of the 2nd movie I got all that

Seems that media for me gets very unpredictable towards the outside edge of the disc

Changed media to Riteks, problems disapperaed, but getting them rarely with the Riteks, just a slight pause

With the Mirrors I had constant regular problems, pausing, stuttering, and frequently the dread freeze of the DVD

Try a different media, it worked for me

  6. Yes it has happened alot at the end of the movie but also half way through, there doesnt appear to be any real patten. I think im gonna try some differnet media. My DVD player is a Sony DVPNS400.....dont suppose anyone has tried Mirror DVD-Rs on a Sony player (just for a second opinion?!)

    Thanks for the advice.

  8. Had 2 X 25 cakes of Mirror +R's

both had different media codes - first cake had 12 failures, second cake first 6 failed so sent the whole lot back.

  9. I bought a spindle of these disks at Micro Center in Dallas for $19.95 ($.69 per disk). At this price, what the heck.

What I found is they are useless for burning movies. They are really bad in the area 3/4'' from the edge (uneven dye layer). However, I use them to store data (photos, video clips, etc) up to 2 GB. They seem to work pretty well for this, so it's not a total waste.
If it works, don't fix it.

That's where mine came from. I used them for a 1GB project, even then had a few coasters. About 40-60% errors on the discs if full. Got 15 per $5 on clearance table. That store sucks for media.

  12. Hello again, have been burning my Ritechs and they all play without any problems, although alot of the movies do seem to be stuttering (very slightly) on panning shots only. Other than that the movies are perfect.

If anyones got any thoughts/recommendations on solving the jerking pan shot problem that would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

This stuttering occurs when played both on the computer DVDROM drive and a set top player? If so, both might have a problem. Take it to a friend's house and try it out, or go to a electronics store and try on a few different brands.
If all devices experience this the media could be suspect, but I'd lay blame on your burner first then go from there. Check the DVD Writer database to the left of this page for media most compatible with your writer and update the firmware. Take some of the media to a friend's house and try on their writer (if you can).

    Best of Luck,
    -Evan-

  14. It does it on all DVD players, but not all the DVDs burnt suffer from the problem. The DVD writer on my Mac is a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R5112 which from what ive seen of reviews on this site is a good DVD writer with little or no problems.

I have heard that it maybe to do with the way the movie has been encoded in the first place.
