Two Questions ... before we get started...
1.) What is 24p 's frame rate? (24 or 23.967 .. if I were to export a 3D Studio max file .. would I need to convert it to 24 fps or 23.976 fps in Virtual Dub or leave it at 24p)
2.) When editing in AVID, why is it when I import 30 fps, I get an output on my TV, but when importing 24 or 23.976, it doesn't preview?
FYI I am using my GL1 to export to my TV ... I used to edit in Premiere with the GL1 going to my VCR to my TV.
DO I need the Panisonic 24p camera to capture and preview on the TV or could the GL1 do that?
COULD I shoot in 24pA and take the tape and place it in a GL1 to capture 24p to AVID?
Sorry for the questions, but I am new to AVID and 24p...
Thanks,

first -- what model and version and software of avid are you using as it makes a huge diff.
second - avid support is really good , i take it this is a older non supported system (see question 1) ?
as for frame rate
output from 3dstudio max, as in film frames , should be 24fps ... normally , except many CG are done at 30fps also ... anyway in the choice between 23.976 and 24- 24 is the right answer in that case.
what you do with this output determines if you need to change the frame rate.
if you need to sync for audio , you have to do the sync @ 23.976 , which means sync to final output or use vdub to change the frame rate and create a sync file (this is not easy to work this way with an avid / protools system - vegas or fcp blows the doors off avid pro for example for doing this) ..
input 24p into CCE or procoder for exampe and you can select to encode it at 23.976 IF pulldown is to be applied for ntsc dvd ..
your question 2 ...... see my question above ... but really, if you are new to avid -- it may be this is a new avid system and i suggest you contact your dealer or avid and have them walk you through it ... I can send your email address to avid in fact as i know many many of the people there ..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
It's the newest avid, but its at work and I don't know the version info. I was just curious. I think it's 4.3 with a soon to be upgrade to 4.5. It's for a MAC OS X 10.3 I think.
I wanted to know if we could edit commercials in 24p and edit them and export them back to DV. Editing on DVCpro is no prob and exports great. But 24p seems tricky as it doesn't export a preview on the monitor.
The other editors do not know 24p but regular 30i ... I just need to do more research on 24p I guess. Some day, I wanted to edit just 24p and burn to DVD at 24p. ... with the option of export 24p to 30i for VHS copies.
Thanks, -

All I want is to capture at 24p (23.976), edit 24p, export to DVD at 24p (23.976) but preview while I'm editing on the monitor at 24p and be able to make VHS dubs at 24p. For some reason, its not previewing on the monitor, but its only in 24p more. (Actually when I set up my project, I get a choice of formats ... 30i, 24p and 23.976 and I am told to select 23.976 for a project.
