  1. I want to burn anime videos (.avi format) to CD or DVD. Someone suggested to convert the .avi to .mpeg or .mpg first. Is it better that way??
And is there the best way to burn a video?

How to burn the best qualilty is a wide open question. My answer is to start w/t the best possible source. you will have to convert to mpg if you want to go to cd or dvd. just read the conversion guide on going from avi to DVD. its to your left <----

  3. If you just want to play them back on a computer, then you can just burn them straight as a data disk (copy them onto the disk unchanged). This will give you the best quality as it doesn't require re-encoding.

If you want to play them back on a set-top box then it may require re-encoding, although some may be able to play them if they are just copied as data disks. First, check wheather or not your desired playback machine can play them as is, copied straight to disk. Then check out the guides on how to convert if it doesn't.

  4. I want to burn them to DVDs and actually see them with the video player.
My friend said if I convert .avi to .mpg first, the quality would be better. Is it right?

Unless you have one of the few players that can play MPEG 4 (Divx, Xvid, 3ivx, etc) files you simply won't be able to watch AVI files via your DVD player. You have to convert them to MPEG.

No, it would not be better. It is not really possible to make something better, in a sense. You can adjust it, with filters and such, and mask some of the mistakes, but it will not be truly better, in some cases it make be slightly worse.

But if you are going to do a quick convert from avi to mpg, no it will not look better.
    Blah, blah, blah
