Hi all,
i am quite happy with the PAL SVCD preset on my Leadtek 2K Expert card, but with some Tri-Nations Rugby action coming up i'd like to up the quality a bit
If i use the PAL DVD format, a normal game (with pre/post game commentary) stretches to about 2.5 Hrs. Obviously, they don't fit on a single DVD using this DVD capture preset, the whole thing ends up like around 6 or 7 GB.
Question: how can i get the whole thing to fit on a DVD while trying to keep the best quality? What Re-Encode parameters should i use to achieve this?
Many thanks in advance!

Hello,
You could shrink it after you author it. This will have some quality loss but you could judge for yourself if its still adequate.
You could also use the half d1 resolution (352x240 i think, thats for NTSC, don't know pals half spec) if your card supports it. This should decrease the total size. Though I don't know how much of a reduction you'll get.

well, i can't remember the presets right now, i have to examine them later tonight.
Thing is, DVD presets use something like 740x576 (or around there) with like 6000-8000 bitrates. If i only could use half of that, like 480x576 (PAL SVCD) with around 5000 bitrate instead of the default 2200 that would be great.
Authoring progs (Ulead, Tmpgenc dvd author) seem to try to re-analyze or re-encode the stuff anyway..it takes ages to do it, and it doesn't become smaller either!
Will do some test recordings until Saturday anyway... -
Within the Leadtek PVR software you can create your own set of capture profiles.
Depending on the installed version of the software, the only problem I have encontered is keeping audio at 48khz so the file does not have to be re-encoded with authoring program
Changing to a lower resolution does not reduce file size.
Lower resolution allows you to use a lower bitrate and mantain output quality as viewed on standard TV
file size depends on bitrate
quality depends on bitrate as applied to resoultion -
Right now i re-encode using divx and i get about 1/4 file to 1/2 of the original size.
Question is: if i use the DVD profile (7..x 5..) with 6000-8000kbps, what divx bitrate would be good in order to keep the same quality? I usually go towards 1000, max 1200 kbps in divx.
And another question: what software can i use to cut off a portion of the mpeg and SAVE it to another file. I want to use this for example if i see some cool commercials i want to encode as separate files. They do not need to be cut-off for good from the original file, just "copied" and "pasted" in another file
thanks... -
If you are going to be re-encoding anyways, why not do it right and just capture to AVI instead of MPEG2?
