  1. Lite-On AllWrite LVW-5005 DVD/CD Recorder

Is this a good unit for a novice to buy that wants something real easy to use with good quality, is it dependable, the price at around $299 seems good, is there any other good quality easy to use ones that I'd be better off with.

I want to copy from my SVHS and Hi 8 to hand out in dvd format.

I also want to copy from cable TV

Ease of use and quality is very important...

    Thanks

I'd only get the LiteON if you want to hack it for MV removal.

By far, the JVC is better.

  3. I recently bought a LiteOn LVW5005 from CompUSA. I like the fact that I can record on DVD+RW/+R, DVD-RW/-R, and CD-RW/-R. I already had a ton of blank DVD+R's and DVD+RW's. I have three Tivo's and being able to record Video CD's directly from the LVW5005 is good for the shows I have on Tivo that I want to keep but not use a DVD disk. Works great for the 2,000+ blank CD's I have. (Many free after rebate buys.)

One of the things I didn't like with the LiteOn is that it has only a single input and output. I am also trying a Philips DVR615 that have multiple inputs and outputs. With multiple outputs, I have a set of outputs going to my Harmon Kardon receiver and I have a set of output going directly to my TV. (Easier for the wife to navigate.)

With multiple inputs, I have one set coming from my DirecTivo and another set coming from my reciever so I can record whatever source my receiver is on, Radio, VHS, etc.

Just wish I knew which one would last the longest. Guess from past experience, extended warranties would be a good idea.

  4. I bought this unit a couple of months ago from Novatech (£199) and am very impressed with it. I record TV via a digital receiver and get a fantastic picture in the 1hr/2hr modes. The 2 highest settings are of a good enough quality for DVD's. The 4 hour mode can be likened to VCD quality. I have used it successfully to transfer DV from my Canon camcorder without any hassle. The feature for all media (except Ram) is a plus point. Although I have only had the recorder for a limited amount of time I am not dissapointed at all.

I highly recommend the Lite On LVW5005.

the 4 hour mode looks quite nice, and is essentially SVCD,
    with the following spec: 2.5mbps, 352/480, mpeg2.

I'm amazed at all of the cool features this machine has.
not fluff either, good functional features.
    Very easy and intuitive.
It's actually a fun rig. you won't be disappointed.
BTW, the warranty is 1 year parts AND Labor.
    Isn't everyone else 90 days?
One time, I had a problem with one of my Lite-On cdr drives, I can
at least say that Lite-On responded to my satisfaction.
I think they're pretty good company.
And no, I don't work for them, but I will go out of my way
    to praise good work.

    cheers!
