  1. I AM TRYING TO MAKE MY FIRST DV TO DVD CONVERSION, BUT HAVE PROBLEMS WITH BLURRY IMAGES. STILLS ARE CLEAR BUT WHEN OBJECTS OR BACKGROUND ARE MOVING, THE IMAGES GET VERY GRAINY.

    HARD-/SOFTWARE:
    WINDOWS XP
    1.8 GHz
    224 MB RAM
ULEAD VIDEO STUDIO (FOR CAPTURING TO PC & EDITING DV + CONVERSION TO DVD-PAL (LIVE IN EUROPE))

    FACTS:
    - VIEWING ON TV DIRECTLY FROM DV-CAMERA = PERFECT
    - VIEWING MPEG-CONVERTED FORMAT ON COMPUTER (WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER FOR EXAMPLE) = GRAINY
    - VIEWING DVD-BURNED COPY ON TV THROUGH DVD-PLAYER = GRAINY
    - VIEWING OTHER (RIPPED) DVD-BURNED MOVIES ON TV THROUGH DVD-PLAYER = PERFECT

WHEN CAPTURING DV TO PC I AM IMMEDIATELY CONVERTING TO PAL-DVD WITH THE FOLLOWING SETTINGS:
    PAL (25 fps)
    Field order B
    MPEG files
    24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
    (DVD-PAL)
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 9000 kbps)
    Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Joint stereo
NO OTHER APPLICATIONS ARE BEING USED AT THE SAME TIME. NO FRAMES ARE DROPPED. NO ERROR MESSAGES ARE DISPLAYED.

    CONCLUSION:
THE PROBLEM, AS FAR AS I CAN UNDERSTAND, MUST APPEAR EITHER DURING CAPTURING OR DURING CONVERSION TO MPEG

I REALLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO, AND WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE SOME CLEVER THOUGHTS!

first thought, press the caps lock key. caps are considered to be shouting on here.

Second, try capturing your DV using DVIO or DVapp. very robust apps which won't alter the DV in any way.

Third, edit in Ulead and output back to DV. Encode the DV using TMPGenc, free trial is available. This will take much longer than Ulead but the quality will be vastly improved.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with interlacing, give tmpgenc a try and holler back.

  3. man, couldnt be any easier than capturing with windows XP pro built in software.
then converting to mpeg2 with TMPGEnc.
finally finish it off in ifoedit,or dvd-lab.

  4. Flaninacupboard - thanks a lot!
Firstly, hell of a lot easier to edit an avi-file compared to an mpg in Ulead. Secondly, even if it took me some time to figure out the best settings for the TMPGenc - like you said - the result was much better.

...as you may notice, I have even found the caps lock key!

All good news! Makes it all worthwhile when you can sit back and show off your discs.

One thing I'd like to know is where the hell the "any" key is. I see it all the time, "press any key." I've looked all over this damn keyboard. Maybe it a MAC thing.
