I wouldn't want to lower the already high standards here in the off-topic forum

  7. Looks more like a dolphin to me. If you go swimming on the Gold Coast at certain beaches you'll sometimes see packs of dolphins riding the waves close to the beach. If it was a shark though I'd be shitting my pants and hoping it wasn't one of the types that doesn't have a problem taking a bite of humans.

Is it true that in America you don't use shark-nets to prevent sharks from coming into your beaches?

You could tell by looking at the tail ....a shark has a vertical tail and a dolphin, like other mammals like the whale, has a horizontal tail. But would you want to get close enough to inspect it?

As far as I know.....NO shark nets. We don't have the shark "problems" that Oz has. Well at least NOT to the extent Oz has. We also have very few Great Whites on our East Coast beaches. The majority of those that inhabit waters near The U.S. are on the West Coast.
We also don't have Box Jellyfish or the Fear Snake either.
The funniest Crocodile Hunter episode I ever saw though was his visit to Rattlesnake country here in the U.S.....he accidentally found himself surrounded by rattlesnakes and got very panicky all of a sudden. He actually swore at the cameraman to get the hell out of the way. The cameraman was blocking his only way out...
What was that line in Absence of Malice?...It's a shark that walks up and bites a cop on the ass...all the rest are just fish. And the girl writing the article jokingly says "Ok...FISH infested waters"...

    Damn, another thing Baywatch misrepresents.

Box Jellyfish are a small problem because they only affect a small area of our coastline, the same I believe with most other dangerous marine life we have like the Blue Ringed Octopus and the Stone Fish.

The scariest thing I've been close to in all my years of swimming was when I was on Stradbroke Island (ferry ride from the east coast so not far off the coast) with mates and trying to show off that I was the best swimmer I swam out to the shark nets. As I was just about to touch the buoy this big shadow passes just on the other side of the net.

Needless to say I made it back to the jetty in record time. I think it was either a giant turtle or a medium sized shark.

The last problem I heard of with sharks in the US was the Bull Shark (not sure of that name, but I think that's what it was called).

Around the Florida coast, from the Gulf all the way around and up to the Carolinas... There was a large amount of them being detected and some of them were swimming real close to the beach line. There were a number of bite incidents and even a death or two, if I recall... Someone who lives in that area would know more about it....

I heard something about this particular shark can swim in as little as 18 inches of water, thus explaining why they were so close to the shore line....

It was a couple of years ago that they were making a big fuss about it.. I don't remember all the details...

Honestly, I never knew that anyone used shark nets to keep them away from the beaches.... they would have to be pretty big nets or setups of nets to be effective... that's interesting.

When I was in Melbourne....the woman who was "putting us up" for a week came into the living room with this can of spray CRAP stinking up the whole room. I asked her what the hell she was doing. She tells me she saw a spider run under the entertainment center. So I go get a Kleenex...grab the spider and flush it.
She looked at me in horror after I told her I took care of the spider and she replied "We don't just go and grab spiders here in Australia".
Maybe it was a paranoid woman talking....not sure....but she seemed somewhat serious. There aint much that is NOT poisonous in Oz....but on the other hand...one of the most poisonous spiders in America is also one of the most common ones....the "daddy long-legger"....but it's mouth is too small to bite a human. If more people in America only knew that..

I always love those "not to scale" disclaimers in the drawings !!

The shark looks like one from a cartoon!

Their is about 20 species of dangerous sharks in Australia but the most common to attack people causing injury or death are the Bull Shark, the White Pointer (Jaws), the Tiger Shark and the Dusky Whales Shark.

Did some further searching on the internet and was lead to the photographers official site where he confirms it is a dolphin not a shark.

"Spray crap" = Fly/Insect Repellent Spray. Don't you Americans have that?

As for grabbing the spider I wouldn't grab anything that has the potential to bite me, fatal or not. Their are only four venomous spiders that are commonly found in Australia, the Redback Spider, the Funnel Web Spider, the Mouse Spider and the Brown Spider. Even then, most bites from them don't cause death or even major injuries, usually the result is a blister, nausea, local pain etc.

Most people here just kill Spiders by squashing them with a rolled up book or a shoe.

The Daddy Long Legs Spider is actually a good spider to have around the house as it kills other spiders and pests. Alot of other Spiders also are useful when it comes to eradicating other insects and pests from around the house.

I don't think anyone notices accuracy when it comes to plotlines, especially in a ridiculous show like Baywatch - give you one guess why that one has lasted as long as it has

Is it the gritty, realistic, well written plots? What about the oscar-worthy acting? No..?

I remember the battle between Queensland and Hawaii into trying to win over the producers into filming the series in their state. Would have been good if Queensland had of won, would have only been a short trip for me to go have a perve on them filming the beach scenes.

Picture yourself sitting there on a lawn chair, sipping a Foster's, watching take after take of beautiful babes running down the beach in skimpy thongs. Could life get any better?

I saw a special on Baywatch aired in the U.S. which said that a town in Oz fought to NOT have Baywatch filmed there. I thought that was pretty cool....NOT giving in.

You know, I would say this thread has gone way off topic. But that would imply there was ever a topic to begin with. :P
