Anyone thinking of buying the Memorex DVD-R 8x don't waste your money. I bought a 10 pack on sale at staples and wish I hadn't. Nero 6 will only recognize them as 4x. After burning a couple of disc I ran DVDInfo Pro on them and you wouldn't believe the errors I got. It was something like 4500. My Fuji DVD+R 4x burn at 6x on my Nec 2510. The code for these say they're cmc . Now I know why lordsmurf put the cmcs on the bottom of the list. Tonight I'm going to try a Maxell DVD-R That I got from Walmart.

What are the consequences of having those errors? Do the discs not play? I bought some memorex DVD-R 4x awhile ago (before reading some negative things about them), and while they seem to burn and play fine for me, I can't help but wonder if they aren't also full of errors. Would I notice anything during playback on my set top dvd player?
Also, say I got quality media - would copying the data on the memorex discs to the quality discs copy the errors also, or are they a product of the actual media and not the data on the media?
Thanks,
Brent -
I've only test played them on my computer and what I checked played ok. When I get a chance I'll watch the whole movies and let you know. From what I understand burning video is more forgiving than burning data. If the first 2 disc plays ok I'll use the rest backing up some VHS tapes. You can be sure I'll never buy them again. I can't answer your question about copying to a better quality DVD, I've never tried it. I would think if the movies are playing ok now it's probable safe to keep them.

I'm using a Nec DVD RW ND-2510A with firmware version 2.15. I just got this drive and haven't checked for any firmware updates yet.

the burner is fine, the media sucks.....I hate Memorex, since I got a pack of 5 CD-RW 2 yrs ago, and only one of them worked.....that really sucks.
stick with Verbatim, Sony, or Maxell for best results....and if you have more money, get TayoYuden -
Just got done burning a Maxell DVD-R 4x. Nero 6 saw it as a 8x so I burned a movie at 8x. So far I haven't noticed any problems with it.

The reason I asked what burner you had was that the Pioneer 107d 1.16 firmware would only allow them to burn at 4x even though it said it added support for them.
I'm not sure if firmware 1.18 fixed it or not.
To me it sounds like the Nec firmware doesn't support for the Memorex Cmc 8x media. They will have to add it. Herrie's firmware may allow you to burn it at 8x, but I'm not sure though. -
RUN data verification with NERO and you'll see what kind of ERRORS you get with these low quality Memorex (AKA CMC) disks. EVEN if nero burns fine without failure, 99% of the time, the disk will fail data verification. Meaning some files are UNREADABLE.
