    Hello,

I am about to buy a Philips 642 and have some stuff that was captured from HDTV and converted to XviD at 960X528. I would like to convert it down to play properly on this new player, 640X352 widescreen at a lower bitrate while loosing as little quality as possible.

I don't know that much about XviD but I do know that this sort or transcoding can be done. Also, I have heard that the Philips machine doesn't like stuff converted with Q-pel so is there a tool to look at the file to see if it was converted that way and is there a way when converting it to remove this?

Lastly, since I am just getting into Xvid coding what is everyones favorite XviD guide or tutorial? I am familiar with Tmpgenc. Is there any way to use it's gui for the Xvid codec? not going from Xvid to MPEG but just to convert with the Xvid codec.

    Thanks a bunch,
    Mike

Anybody? Surely some one can at least give me a clue about some of this?

  3. I can't help with the Xvid or HDTV side of things, but you can definitely use the TMPGEnc Gui.

All you need to do is select Files/Output to File/AVI File from the main menu. you can then select cdec and compression options.

I'm not sure this would give you anything over and above using virtualdub (using the resize filter and recompressing the video). Maybe give both method's a try on a small sample of your source video and see if your player likes it.

You may also like to have a look at the forums on doom9.net where there is a load of f information and some "one click" tools as well.

    Good Luck.
