My question has probably been asked - and answered - many times before. But I've searched this and other sites without finding it.

I'd like to convert VHS tapes to DVD. I capture in 640X480 in VirtualVCR with PICVideo, no problem. I edit in VirtualDubMod and frameserve to TMPEGenc plus, then author in MovieFactory2.5 and burn to DVD in ImgTool.

My problem is the filtering process and telecine. In order to use the AVISynth filters I've found and encode without getting motion artifacts, I have to first convert to 24fps using inverse telecine. But then TMPEGenc bumps it back up to 30fps by duplicating every fourth frame (and thereby making it jerky). No doubt this is to keep audio in sync. I can't seem to find any good filters in AVISynth or VirtualDub that does a decent job of filtering without running into the telecine/artifact problem.

So, is there a way around this conundrum?

TMPGenc won't output 29.97fps video unless you tell it to. After running the inverse telecine filter on your footage, you will be sending 23.976fps footage to TMPGenc. To properly encode this, set the output framerate to 23.976fps (29.97fps internally) and then enable the 3:2 pulldown when playback option on the video tab. This will store the video at 23.976fps and the pulldown flags instruct the DVD player to telecine it to 29.97fps in real time as it plays. Essentially, it redoes what you undid with your inverse telecine script...but you get all the benefits of encoding 23.976fps progressive footage so its definitely the way to go. Incidentally this is how almost all commercially released NTSC DVDs are encoded.

    Got it!

Can't tell you what a pain this problem was. Many sincere thanks!
