  1. When I convert AVI to DVD then playing the resulting DVD on the iMac is no problem. Picture is geat, sound is great. Same result when I play this movie on a Windows XP system. So apparently the DVD is in order.

However very often (better: almost always) when I play that same DVD on my standalone Pioneer (4 years old) player the first 3/4 has perfect picture and sound.

However toward the end there starts a cracling sound and in the picture there are these bocks visible and even sometime the playback is fully stopped.

On DVD's that I buy there is no problem.

Anyone suggestion to what could be the cause and how to prevent this problem?

    A few questions then:

    1. What is the maximum bitrate I should use?

    2. Why does the problem only arise when nearing the end of a movie?

    3. The problem also (sometimes!) arises when I use a conversion programm that I cannot control, being programs like Toast and similar?

    Thanks for your replies.

yea -- could be crappy media also .. but if it plays ok in a PC , maybe not

max bit rate depends on the encoder your using -- 8000 is a safe max. ussually
