Okay, so I've got a DVD that was given to me by some idiot or other, who is very proud of the work he's done on it. Whatever. So, the issue is, he's thrown some letterbox clips on it, and then in a stroke of brilliance, told the DVD to play in 16:9 mode. So, the footage should be in a 4:3 aspect, with nice big black bars encoded into the video, but instead, its in 16:9, and producing some very nice fat people. Now, as far as I know, there is no original material left, only this DVD. So, is it possible to change all the video on this DVD to display as 4:3 material instead of 16:9?

If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

Restream can do what you are talking about. You will have to demux the DVD video files into separate .m2v + audio files, but then Restream can save a new .m2v for you with the 4:3 flag without re-encoding. Then remux and/or author the new .m2v (with the 4:3 flag) with your audio file into a new DVD and you're all set.

Oops - just noticed you are a Mac user. I don't know if there is a Mac version of Restream. I think there is a Mac version of Pulldown.exe that may be able to do the same thing. I'm not sure, though. If you are able to use a friend's PC, Restream will definitely work, though.

Yes, it appears that PullDownX will do it. I used version 0.1, don't now if there is another version. I tried it on a 16x9 letterboxed .m2v stream I'm working on. QT and VLC opened the results as 4x3 letterboxed. mpgtxwrap is supposed to work also, I couldn't get it to work for me but I didn't spend much time on it.

This tool works on m2v's only? So I'll need to demux the vobs, work with it, and then remux?

Tugboat:
Where did you find PulldownX? From the conversation above, I'm assuming this is a Mac version of Pulldown.exe?

As Tugboat noted, IfoEdit can be used to change the aspect ratio in the IFO files. Does the aspect ratio also have to be changed in the VOB files? I'm trying to change from 4:3 to 16:9, and I can use IfoEdit to change the flag in the IFO files, but Bitrate Viewer shows my VOB files also have a flag set to 4:3. Do I need to change those too? If so, with what tool? Thanks.
