oh man i can see this starting a major war.

my fav. is CMC! esp memorex CMCs

    pysch! :P

Naw, j/k, i like anything that is RICOHJPN as far as (+) goes, **** memorex tho, usually TDKs or Maxells.

(-) the MXLs i got from that office depot sale seem to work well, only burned about 3 so far.

i forgot, one thing i dont like about the maxells this that they have small amounts of fine strinngy dust-type particles on the write side, right out of the spindle!...i thought this was crappy, given their good rep. Maybe i just got an unlucky dusty batch

I use 50 packs of Maxell printable shiny silver top DVD-Rs from Newegg- terrific media.

I Have an Optodisc 25 pack gold top 4x DVD-R spindle from Newegg but returned the rest cause they had problems (won't get into detail).

I Have made four perfect Memorex CMC DVD+R backups. :P Sold the rest cause wouldnt work in my laptop without bitsetting.

I use Ritek 2x DVD-RWs from allmediaoutlet. These are fine.

I was really into using the TDK+R:RICOHJPN but I have found out about TDK using CMC, So I don't use them anymore, don't want to take the chance of getting CMC, Now it's Verbatim+R:MCC. I have a load of Maxell+R:RICOHJPN & a few Maxell-R:MXL just for the heck of it, so im very happy with that. I havnt had the pleasure of Taiyo Yuden yet.

    So it goes like this

    TDK+R 4X
    Verbatim+R 4X & 8X
    Maxell+R & -R 4X
    Memorex+RW 4X

    Plextor 708A & 712A

As you can see, I mainly use +R's all of my Standalone's love +R's even my Playstation 2 for Games and movies...

  11. I'd say DVD writer makes the difference.

I'm glad that I chose the Pioneer DVR-106 over the Nec1300 or other burners last year.
My friends always give me their blanks they can't write with their Nec1300 and LG4040.

To me it doesnt really matter whether its a MAXELL (TYG01) or just a RITEKG04.

I'm pissed off at TYG01 right now. My last 10 pack was mostly duds.

I had some TDK and MXLRG02 choke too.
I think it's time to clean the burner.

    Maxell 4x DVD-R White Printable
    Taiyo Yuden 4x/8x NON Printable.

I pulled out my A03 the other day just to have a look see at the insides. Keep in mind, this drive was made in June 2001. It was spotless. Not one bit of dust, or anything.

To clean the drive, take it apart and use a high quality cotton swap (Q-TIP brand works well), with a 50-50 mixture of rubbing alcohol and water. Make sure the Q-TIP isn't dripping wet, and gently swab the laser. Allow time to dry, and reasemble.

This should only be done in extreme cases. Like if you live on a dirt road in Arizona/Texas, or blow smoke inside the drive constantly with the tray open. You should really never have to clean the drive, unless you let dirt/dust get inside it.

Shooting compressed air inside you drive can be bad. The force of air could knock the laser out of alignment, or if there is dust inside the drive, it could scratch/cover the laser.

Compressed air cans often have warnings "not to be used on camera lenses". A DVD burner is not a camera but I would not want to risk using something possibly abrasive on the laser.

    With my burners:

Plextor 708a loves Memorex 4x (any Ricohjpn01) and burns them at 8x.

Pioneer A05 likes almost any decent -R media. Burns almost anything that has a -R attached to it. But mine defnitely dont like Princo's and Optodics 1-2x. Best speed is 4x on all -R. My most dependable -R burner with decent media like G04.

NEC 2500a likes Ritek G04 and Prodisc S03. Using Herrie's latest FW (HP/2510 DL) can burn these 4x at 8x. Now if I can only get my hands on some DL DVD for testing. I previuosly use this burner for experimenting and to test FW patches since most FW hax's hasnt been really realiable on my NEC. But with the newest FW from Herrie, I am now using the NEC to burn -R more then the A05, good quality but mainly for its speed.

Only use Ricohjpnw11 in the +RW since they are 4x. Dont use -RW (2 slow) except occasionally the Pioneer one that came with the A05 just to test -RW compatibility of a burner.

If I had to burn a 100% dependable DVD, then definitely the Ricohjpn01. They are perfect with the the Plex and works well with my NEC also.

  25. After using ProDiscS03 for a short period I think this is my new favorite not only becuz they are cheap (price-wise that is [$44 for 100 DVD-R]), but they burn faster (less than 15 mins) than any other 4x media (+ and -) I have used (MCC, Ricoh, Maxell, CMC), tests show no read errors, and they play back flawlessly on PC and settop. Now if they only last for a while I'll be sitting pretty

Wow, capmaster, we use the same two kinds of DVD-Rs, Optodisc and Maxell (I use non-branded). Personally, after initial good experiences, I have found the Optodisc gold tops to be mostly shit, even at 2x! The Maxells on the other hand are another sign of glorious Japanese quality and are the cadillacs of DVD-Rs.

  30. 1.Verbatim DVD+R 2.4x Inkjet Printable (MCC Singapore) Not one coaster in 4 spindles. Hard to find in stores.

2.Maxell DVD+R 4x (Japan made 10 packs) One coaster in 40 used. Fairly easy to find.

3.TDK 4x (non-CMC) No coasters. Easy to find. *Haven't tried the CMC version TDK, may be ok if TDK has any type of control over the manufacture.
If it works, don't fix it.
