  1. Is there any particular downside to making many (30-50) chapters in the process of authoring for DVD?

I own several technical manuals on VHS which I've converted to DVD. I used TMPGEnc Author, made no menus (don't want to change the look of the video) but wanted to ultimately be able to flip through the video using the <> options on the control, moving from chapter to adjacent chapter quickly.

Works, works well. Just wondering if I'm burning any bridges or incurring any particular downside (in size or re-authoring options) in doing this . . .

I got a "too many chapters" error in DVD Author just once. If I remember right it said the limit was 99 chapter.

    Depends on the software, actually.

    - Some of this cheaper stuff we use at home can crash with too many chapter marks.
    - Some refuse to allow chapter less than 7 minutes apart.
    - Some can cause audio/video sync errors from bad VOB muxing.
    - Some will ignore the chapter marks and not make them at all if it sees too many.

i guess the message is - dont use the cheap stuff ..

anyway ... acording the the dvd specifications the max number is 255 -- but 99 per VTS (title set) , so you would need multiple title sets to get more than 99 ..

it is VERY rare to have even 99 chapters on a single title set -- one dvd i know of does (154 total chapters spread out on 4 title sets) and i'm sure there others ..

i just looked up different authoring program specs and they dont all list thier max number of chapters and such .....

i would say that what Lordsmurf says makes sense .... try it out and test ...
