  1. Ok I am trying to figure out why I am dropping so many frames. I'm transferring via firewire from my DV camera using Ulead Videostudio and DVIO....I have defragged my HD, closed all background apps, removed myself from the internet....On a 4gig video .avi I am still dropping 120 frames and I cant figure out what I am doing wrong?? Any ideas?

some xtra details may help to get you an answer, computer specifications (detailed) , dv camera model, could be numerous things causing it and without more details would be hard to analyze.

alot of people use WINDV for capture, seems to work pretty good.

  4. I should have included details, Im sorry

My system is a P4 2.66 with 1gig ram, my Hd is 80gb 7200 8mb...I am using the same HD to transfer to, but still, it should be fast enough to keep up with the camera - I have plenty of unused space. My firewire card is by Dazzle and my DV camera is a Samsung. Im not sure if there are any settings on ym DV camera I need to worry about when I trasnfer, I just turn it to camera mode....also I have not updated any possibloe firmware for my firewire, havent even checked if there is any. Anyways, it seems like alot of dropped frames for only a 30min video so Im thinking it must be something real big???

Could be any number of things. I'd go with a second HD personally. Running your OS, capturing and saving all to the same disc is a pretty good workout for even the fastest machines, and all it takes is some silly little program service or process running in the background to access the disc while you're capturing and you're gonna be dropping frames.

    My $.02

  6. I use Ulead VS7 on IBM ThinkPad P4 2.0GHz with USB 2.0 external HD. to capture DV Type 2 from Sony camcorder. The drop frames is 45 out of 111000 frames (about 13GB). Is is acceptable?

I have no idea where the drop frames are, or whether they are evenly distributed.

As for 120 out of 25000 frames drop rate with your machine config, it seems high. I guess you may not notice the difference.

You'll find that extra drive space to be invaluable even beyond the problem you had dropping frames. You either have already or soon will discover that with this new hobby you never seem to have enough disk space
