They're very different people who find comfort in each other in a country where neither of them fit. Thats what I got out of it. I thought it was a great movie.

There are some scenes in the movie that are just plain useless. The movie would be only half an hour long if those were taken out. For instance, when she goes somewhere and sees a woman under an umbrella and she spends a few minutes just looking at her and then some flowers. WTF???? Another one is when she goes to the arcade and sees a bunch of people playing videogames...WHATS THE POINT!!!! The entire movie is filled with it.

I thought the lensing was by far the best part of this movie. However I saw it in theaters when it first came out and noticed two instances where the boom mic was visible. I don't tolerate that from a movie that's supposed to be of such a high calibre, Coppola or not. However I did think the uneasy attraction between Scarlet and Bill was fantastic, like they wanted to "hook up" but both knew it would hurt the other so since they did love each other they decided not to get involved in that way. I also thought Murray was hilarious in this, though in a much more subtle way than even he is known for. He was only better in Wes Anderson's works. I can't wait for the upcoming one he's doing with Anderson.

I also like the lack of dialogue in a lot of those scenes, just a chance to take in the scenery and watch Lance's wonderful camera direction. Keep in mind the whole film was shot in under a month. I'd say it was otherwise pretty well for something done so quick.

Meh, I guess I only pay attention to the story the first time watching a movie. The later viewing are when I get to really enjoy it.

    Ummm.... NO!

It was the most dis-jointed movie and had the worst ending of any movie I have ever seen. I kept waiting for all the loose ends to get wrapped up and then BAM -- Movie Over. It's like they just ran out of film -- or pulled the plug after running out of money!!! I'm pretty sure it was over -- the credits started rolling !

yeah, Event Horizon had a similar theme and was about a billion times better.

you can see what they were trying to do - a strange life form that's terrifying without having slavering jaws.

It was a meaningless artsy style cover of a movie used to sneak in a few minutes of naked Japanese girls.

That just means you didn't understand the ending, not that it was necessarily bad. You gotta watch the end real carefully and notice what's different. I thought it all made perfect sense...I just didn't like the movie.

I didn't like Lost in Translation either. I liked the connection they had, and Bill Murry makes simple little things funny, but its just that nothing happened.

    Spoiler.........

Its been a while so I forgot most of the details. I think basically he's on his way to the escape pod/ship and he hesitates. Then it cuts to him in his apartment with the girl and she basically says that life or death doesn't matter, that they can just be together. But its ambiguous at first. You don't know whether he is with her in Solaris or if he went back, got her, and took her to Earth. But there's something different in the apartment, I can't remember what but its supposed to be obvious. Something they focused on earlier in the movie, I'll have to check later when I get home.

The point is that you realize they are in Solaris, one way or another. Clooney went back to her and the ship got sucked into it.

Is Clooney dead and now a manifestation of Reya's memories, just like Reya is a manifestation of his? Who knows? But they are in Solaris so their whole existence is basically created from their memories. So, Clooney is choosing to remember things how he wants them to be, that's why the apartment is different. They get to skip that whole nasty suicide problem and essentially change their troubled past. Its sort of a sci fi, "happily ever after."

    That was my take anyway.

So when I turned off SOLARIS after about 30 minutes to go to sleep turining it off was unnecessary.

i found it had the same kind of sleepy atmosphere of 2001, but without the pretty pictures, or the dark broodishness of blade runner, but without any action.

In the intro...if you concentrate hard enough you can see her ass through her panties. But other than that...nothing exciting.

Also, now that I think about it...she wore the same pair throughout the movie. Was she so bored that she forgot to do laundry?
