  1. I've been trying for a week to get a couple of avi files to burn on DVD so I can play them through a standalone DVD player. the first file will play on MPlayer but not quicktime (no audio). I then used DVX Doctor 2 and it would play in quicktime. I have Toast 6 and iMac G4 800 running OS 10.2.8. I downloaded ffmpegx but it will not install.I get this error:
##sudo: gnutar: command not found. I don't even know if I need this app or not. Can ya' tell I'm a newbie to this process? MPEG2Works has been suggested and I am willing to try that if it will do what I need done. I have just been to too many sites with differing opinions on doing what I need done and I get lost really quick. I tried just dragging the avi to toast but it said my 680 meg file was too large for a 4.7 gig disk. Huh?? I just really want to learn this process before I get any more frustrated. Any ideas? I have searched but I am still not sure which way to go. Quicktime Pro, ffmpegx, dvx doctor2, MPEG2Works, Sizzle, the kitchen sink?

    Thanks in advance

  2. I have noticed that sometimes Toast 6.x won't let me do a direct AVI-to-DVD-to-burn DVD-R conversion, quoting the "not enough space" error.

I have gotten around this by having Toast convert the AVI-to-DVD to a DVD disc image. The DVD disc image is usually smaller than 4.36 GB, which I can than burn directly to a DVD-R.

(Note: if the DVD disc image is NOT smaller than 4.36GB, you'll need to use something like DVD2oneX to compress the VIDEO_TS folder created by Toast down to 4.36GB).

To do the AVI-to-DVD Disc Image conversion using Toast 6.x:
Select the "Video" Tab. Open left "option" pane (if not already open) by clicking the button just left of "My DVD" in the main window. Select DVD option. Drop the AVI into Toast and then select "Save as Disc Image" from the "File" menu.

Perhaps this might help a bit...

  5. After I get the disc image, do I open Video or data window in Toast 6? Is PAL format a problem? Sorry for the newbie questions guys...

  6. PAL shouldnt make a difference and it should be in the data tab.
