Dvd Recording: 1. radio stations 2. old cassetes

I will soon buy a desktop dvd recorder with hard disk or not.

I have 2 questions:

1. I want to be able to record my old cassetes from desktop cassete deck to cd.
I think of rca connections through amplifier.
My question is: do the dvd writer write cd-audio? I think most of them write only dvd-r audio. The only dvd writer I found

to record cd-r is Liteon 5005 (All write patent).
What can I do?

2. I want to be able to record radio stations either to hard disk or dvdrw.
Is this possible? Does this suppose to have my amplifier-radio with power on to function all the time? (since there is no

radio tuner inside dvd-writers)
If I do this, can my dvd writer be scheduled to record radio station at specific time?

My only question to you is that why do you want to buy a DVD recorder to do a CD recorder's job? There is a very good reason why the Lite-On 5005 is the only DVD recorder with CD recording capability on the market, simply because most DVD recorder users buy them to replace their VCRs, not their CD recorders.

As for your second question, yes it's possible to record radio broadcast to either HDD or DVDRW. But what you record is just an AC-3 (or LPCM, if available) audio track with blank video image. You'll probably get better return on investment by recording it on CD instead of DVD media. Just my two cents.

So, I understood about radio that will write blank video as well?

I use my computer to transfer tapes and records to CD. I could never imagine using a stand alone DVD recorder. With the computer I can and do record from the turntable, cassette deck, FM, and internet FM broadcasts. It's really not hard, but you will have to ask yourself if you can deal with the time it takes to do this.
A simpler approch (but more limited) is a stand alone CD burner.
For the record, I got a DVD/CD burner as my first burner, in hopes to do DVD's too. It burned out before I figured out how to make a DVD. I could have gotten a lot of good CD only burners for what I paid for it.

I do not have much time for the transfering of tapes.

So I hoped a dvd recorder would help me somehow to do this task easily.

I know about computer sound recording a little, but I think it needs much time and effort.

So, is there any solution?

Mini Disc is a cheap solution and easy to operate. You easily take it anywere and record at your friends place and bring your recorded music were ever you go.

I totally agree with you. All computer DVD writers can make audio CD's - why not the stand-alones? It makes sense to be able to record video AND audio formats without having to disassemble your system and take the turntable, receiver and cassette deck to your computer just to transfer audio to a CD. The computer-based recording does give you better editing capabilities and noise filtering, but is quite a hassle just to make a quick copy of a cassette or record.

One more thing. If you want seperate tracks, on a stand alone, you have to insert them manualy. That means you have to sit there as you are recording and at the right time push a button to make a track marker. With the computer you can make perfact markers.
This said, the way I do it is, first record the tape to the HD. From there it takes me about an hour per disk to edit, burn, lable, list, and file each one.
