What is the difference when recording to mini DV cassetes and recording to HD cassetes on single HD camera.
For example some cameras use both mini DV and HD cassetes, but mini DV are much cheaper.
Final result is same quality or.......????
Is it possible to shoot on mini DV cassetes HDV with full HD resolution (1920x1080).
Regards.

	HDV is 1440x1080.

You can't do 1920x1080 using HDV whatever tapes you buy!

 David.

Here is the justification for higher quality HDV tape.

MiniDV format records individual 720x480 frames and includes error correction at the pixel, line and frame level. As such it can tolerate more dropouts and lower signal to noise during recording.

HDV format is MPeg2 which records one full I frame every 12 (PAL) or 15 (NTSC) frames with change data in between. As such, a dropout error affecting an I frame can influence all the frames in the GOP. In other words, MPeg in general is less fault tolerant than DV, DVCPro or HDCAM formats which record all frames.

So, for something important like a wedding, use higher quality HDV tape. For general recording use a higher than consumer grade MiniDV tape if you desire cost savings. Today, pro grade MiniDV tapes are available online at prices similar or less than retail consumer MiniDV tape. Pro grade MiniDV tapes have fewer dropouts, higher signal to noise and less tape stretch compared to consumer grade tape so perform better for HDV.

My tape of choice for general DV or HDV recording is Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ. I use the same tape in my DV/DVCAM Sony PD-150 and the HDV cams. For paying jobs, I give the customer the choice of tape.

I personally use the Sony DV tapes which are available at Costco.

 I use these on 2 HV20's and my hv30.

It's often said you shouldn't mix tape types in a given camera.

I certainly had very bad experience with this years ago. Some people claim that the problem doesn't exist any more. I'm not convinced.

 Cheers,
 David.
