  1. Hello:

Sorry for the off-topic post but I have always received good advice here.

I downloaded spybot search and destroy and it found like 144 problems with my computer, but it says I do not have the wengine.dll file installed or something along those lines, once it does the restore and is ready to eliminate these files.

I also use ad ware, but it seems I have some problems and despite deleting and reinstaling and shutting down, the spybot is stll giving me problems.

    Any advice?

    Thanks so much

I don't know about a wengine.dll. Never heard of it. I use Spybot and AdAware. Have you got the latest upgrade for Spybot from their site?. If you are running XP, you might get some of the upgrades to the OS from the MS site. At least the ones that deal with security problems. (A whole lot of them, thanks Bill) If your system is seriously contaminated, even Spybot and AdAware can't perform miracles.

EDIT: Some spyware can disable or cripple Spybot and your antivirus programs. Try the Spybot upgrade and if that fails, boot in 'SafeMode' and try it again. Use the Spybot 'Tools' to check your registry and other places the stuff hides.

I use ad-aware and spybot and after deleting files with those 2 programs, I use Ace Utilities in novice mode to clean my registry.

Make sure you shutdown all programs that you don't recognize in your task manager (right click the clock in the bottom right hand corner), processes tab and shut down things you think should not be there. Then click your start button > run...type in "MSCONFIG" (without the quotes and upper or lower case doesn't matter), go to the startup tab and uncheck any programs that you do not recognize.

Sounds to me like you have a program running and it is being protected therefore you can't delete it until it is shut down.

    I hate those spywaring MFers....

  4. I ran into the same problem with a clients computer. I never figured out exactly how to fix that particular problem. I had to reinstall Windows XP to restore the files that the spyware had deleted, one of which was the wengine.dll file that you mentioned. that fixed it so spybot ran correctly but there were still 3 out of nearly 200 programs that spybot just could not get rid of. I tried everything I could think of, booting up in safe mode, diagnostic mode and so on. I never could get rid of those pieces of spyware. they would remove and the next time you run spybot they are right there again. I found that whatever was wrong with her's even knocked out all her restore points as soon as I tried to do a restoration. In the end she restored from the image stored on the disc (DELL computer), and set up Spybot and Kerio firewall before ever going on the internet to begin with.
