    Ok, thanks for all your support on my Sony 4x burn problem (those f**kers) but I'm throwing in the towel on my 500a. I'm gonna get another drive. I've narrowed down my selection to plextor and nec. The cheapest I found on nec is 70.00 and the cheapest I found for the plextor is 145.00. Which of the two is more reliable, I'm more concerned about reliability than price. They both claim a 8x dvd-r burn (I've heard that one before) but plextor claims a 12x dvd+r. Do these drive live up to their burning claim.
    Are they picky on what media type to use in order to achieve ther 8x claim. Is the media they use costly.
    I'll be using your comments on the two drives to make my final decision, so don't leave any info. untold

  2. i have a nec for almost 2 yrs...no problems. even for cheap media.
    i would get a nec 2510, because it has the support for dual layer burning, and is around $90.
    people say that plextor is the best...well, i would not waitste the money for it.

    Hey James,

    Have you given up on the problem? Your question about the Plex or the Nec, it sounds like you are comparing the 2500 to the 712A, which there is no comparsion. I'm not putting down the 2500, it's just, it does not compare to the 712A. Plextor's have never let me down, these babies will read thru anything, you can piss on a disk and the plex will still read it(never did it) I have seen it read some pretty bad sand papered disk, also heard some funny stories of bad disk. If you are comparing the 2500 and the 708A, and money is a factor, I hear go with the 2500 but if money is not factor go with the 708A but if quality is a factor go with the 708A. I have both the 708A and the 712A and I can tell you some amazing speeds with the 712A. The things Plextor claims is true, The funny thing is, the 712A is faster then the 708A in burning @ 8X.

    You asked Is the media they use costly, I dont like cheap media, I dont like them at all, but I usually get mine for about .85 to $1 each disk, when they the lowest, I ususally stack up but always looking for a great deal.

    708A = 8 min burns @ 8X using 4X or 8X media
    712A = 7 mins 40 secs @ 8X using 4X or 8X media
    712A = 6 mins 20 secs @ 12X using 8X media

    here is a link to the Compatible and recommended media for Plextor

    http://www.plextor.com/english/support/media_712.htm#dvdread

    If you can't find your media here, you dont need a burner.....
