I would rip the DVD with DVD Shrink, load the VOBs on Virtual Dub mod, save the audio as a wave file, and burn it to a CD.

thanks for the help mate but me being a total novice, your comments have gone straight over my head

To rip DVDs, go to DVD Backup section at left. Find the DVD Shrink tutorial. Once it has ripped the DVD, the VOB files will have the audio in them.

Once you have the .VOB files you can demux them and convert the audio stream to .wav and burn to a cd.
See guides at left. -
How would you encode an AC-3 or DTS soundtrack as a wave file. I downloaded some great multi-channel concerts from a Swedish radio station site. They are wave files which can be burned to CD preserving the AC-3 or DTS encoding. Play them back through the DVD player and digital amp and you get full multi-channel concerts/music. Sound quality is great.
I just can't work out how to do it at home. -
...or you could get the imTOO DVD Audio Ripper. Actually a pretty nice tool @ $29 if you don't want to go the freeware route.
