  1. I got a friend with a pioneer dvd player. Not sure the model number, but it's kind of old. We tried to play a PAL dvd-r. It played it, but with no color ! Any idea why ? The disc plays in color on DVD-rom players.

Try setting the dvd player to the right tv system. eg NTSC instead of Auto.

probably will the dvdplayer only output it as pal(but try set it as ntsc first) and then must your tv support pal or else will it be black and white. your dvd-rom supports it because the computer doesn't care about pal or ntsc.

  4. Old Pioneers can play only PAL VCD on an NTSC TV. The multiconvert will not work with Mpeg2. To force NTSC output from PAL VCD hold the forward button in while turning it on (not on the remote).
