  1. Hey all I use DVD Decrypter to rip the movies I want and have used DVD Shrink and Clone DVD.

Which of the two is better??? I know DVD Shrink is free and Clone is not.
I have a copy of Clone DVD from a friend 1.3

I have friends who say one is better over the other and the votes go each way.

So which one will I get better results from.

BTW I like to do whole disk backup when I can. Menus and all don't like going under 55% compression.

    Thanks

Best thing to do is try both and do a side by side comparison, quality between the 2 will be subjective so you will get different answers to what is better.

It's a tough call. When using DVD Shrink's "advanced analysis", I would say it produces pretty darn good results, as transcodes go.

When using LIGHT compression, however, I'd say that is where CloneDVD shines.

I don't know about the legality of using a friend's copy of licenced software, but anyway...

You answer your own question - quality is subjective and is determined by the eyes of the beerholder - the one that will give you better results is the one that in your eyes gives the better looking output, just as your friends have done.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Use DVD REBUILDER. It's free and you can use a demo of Cinema Craft Encoder. The process is long but you won't be disappointed in the great quality in the end.

  6. I'm a fan of DVDShrink, but haven't used Clone so can't compare.

When using Shrink, if my compression setting is above 90%, I go ahead and compress. If not, I've started using the Re-Author feature to split between two discs. You can't keep the menus this way, so if you really want a Full Disc backup, you'll have to go another way

Rebuilder was mentioned and I've only heard good things about it.

Do you mean for analysis or burning? I personally use CloneDVD for all my burning, and it's always worked like a charm!

Uhh... please tell me we're all talking about Elby's CloneDVD, and not that pretender program - right?

At any rate, assuming that you aren't willing to go the re-encoding route, it's a coin-toss at light compression rates. But at higher compression rates, Olli himself (the author of CloneDVD) admits that CloneDVD doesn't excel.

  9. Budz, I agree as to DVDRebuilder, but you might have warned any noobs out there tempted to try it that installation and setup can take a fair bit of time and effort (and reading!). If you're using Quenc, anyway (freeware). (I Don't have CCE,$$$, so perhaps that's easier. Is it?). Quenc requires Avisynth, creation of a plugins directory in your registry, and a couple extra DLLs. Just for starters. :P

I like using CloneDVD 2 and for the larger movies (7-8gb rips) I use DVD shrink w/ deep analysis.
