Australians chew mice to win holiday
Two Australian men may be prosecuted after they chewed live mice and bit off their tails as part of a pub competition to win a holiday.
The RSPCA called the incident "outrageous" and said it would seek the maximum penalty against the men.
RSPCA chief inspector Byron Hall said they could face two years in prison and fines of A$75,000 (US$52,050).
The Brisbane hotel where the contest took place condemned it and said it would not happen again.
Mr Hall said both men put mice in their mouths and bit off their tails. One of the men went on to further chew his mouse then spat it out.
They were taking part in a "Jackass promotion" - named after a US TV stunt show - which took place on Wednesdays at the Exchange Hotel in Brisbane and involved undertaking dares, one of the hotel's managers told BBC News Online.
It was not clear who organised the promotions, but Marie Middleton said they had now been stopped.
"The whole incident was horrific," said Ms Middleton.
"It was all supposed to be harmless fun," she said, adding that the hotel had now "tightened management procedures 100%".
She said the hotel was assisting the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in their investigations.
A Queensland state minister, Henry Palaszczuk, urged anyone with information to contact the RSPCA.
The winner is still being sought, while the other competitor has already been interviewed.
"Chewing a mouse and spitting it out is not entertainment, it is barbaric," said Mr Palaszczuk.
"All animals deserve respect. How we treat animals is a measure of how civilized our society is," he said.

His name was MackemX
What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend?

I think it's going too far when you try to give animals the same protections as people. Although it is sick and disgusting what the men did, the SPCA are really out of whack, in my opinion. I remember when I was living in Arizona, they tried to prosecute a man for killing a rat by smashing his skull.
Someone telll the SPCAs: We have dominion over the animals, not vice versa.
P.S. As a sign of personal protest, I had fried shrimp last night, and I bit off everything but the tails. Let me know if the SPCA wants my address, I'll be at home.Hello.

Well, it was cruel and pointless what they did. I think they should get some form of punishment/fine at least.

"could face two years in prison "
Animal abusers rarely get gaol time in Australia.
They most likely will get a suspended sentence and
walk free with a $1,000 fine. Same goes for those
who skin and kill cats and people who set fire
to dogs.
Yes Jeex the boot still exists. Costs just a few dollars
to get the full names and addresses of criminals.

Truly disgusting. However, what if you give your pet snake a mouse and it does the same thing? What is the difference. Whats next , goldfish eating contests?

Well VCDHunter,
you could
a) complain to the neighbor
b) complain to the local authority OR
c) do what I did: play old Frank Sinatra records at high volume
1st thing in the morning and place a speaker outside. Problem was
solved within 3 days. They promised to walk their dog and the barking
stopped. Then my dog started barking at 3am
what if you give your pet snake a mouse and it does the same thing?
and where possible, serve chloroformed dead mice.
Why am I thinking of that scene in Road Trip

Would a restaurant get in trouble for serving fresh lobster?

I'd like to try option d) on you, after I took care of your
family, friends and anyone I thought you cared about.
I hope what you said was just a crass joke. Even so, there is
an old Russian proverb:
mountains never meet but people do.

I know the club where that took place, about 20 minutes from my house.
Used to be good but now the male to female ratio is fucked and all you get is "metrosexual" poofs wearing stripey shirts and gelled hair.
This is just another reason not to go there.

Well, I'm sorry for that and had I know about your circumstance I would probably avoided the subject.

Too much quoting for me to reply to that in context.
Firstly let me start off by saying that I made a glib off the cuff remark about a poison steak, which was meant as a joke, which you have taken to heart for obvious reasons. For this I apologise, unreservedly. I would also like to take this oportunity to point out that I in no way advocate the abuse or mistreatment of animals (except for next doors cat, but thats another story*).
You also seem to have taken to heart my jibes about your "threat" to menow this I just don't get. I was simply try to offer a helping hand with some constructive criticism and you've either failed to understand or are simply being obtuse.
Now the positives -

No one. It was not meant to scare. Anyway cowards like you are always
full of bluff and hot air when they think no consequences will arise.

you sound about 12.
and you sound like a cowardly animal abuser.
Well I'm out as footie is on soon. Post back with semantics if you want but I'm done.
*JOKE

Firstly, this thread has gotten out of hand so I will lock it.
Secondly, whether we "dominate" over animals or not is irrelevant. In Western civil society, people are expected to behave in a humane / not-intentionally cruel manner to animals, and in most societies, this is codified in law.
The RSPCA in Australia is simply doing its job in terms of policing. I don't think anyone can truly argue that this stunt was anything but deliberately and intentially cruel.
Best regards.Michael Tam
