  1. Greetings,

I am not sure if this is a problem with encoding with vdub or if its a hardware cpu problem. I recently overclocked my cpu from 3ghz to 3.6. I have no other problems when I did this but when I encode using Virtual Dub, my pc reboots or shuts down. I underclocked it to about 3.2ghz and it doesnt reboot anymore.

Anyway, is this a software prob or does my cpu need more tweaking?
Perhaps more Ram or better cooling system?
    Thanks

    350watt power supply
    2 fans side and top

Overclocking a 3.0-GHz to 3.6 seems a lot to me. I'd say the reboots / shut downs are due to overheating. What temperature is your CPU running at when this happens. Right now my CPU is 32C (90F). It really doesn't get much hotter than that even during CPU intense activities but I don't overclock. But to answer your question I'd say your problem is too much heat.

  3. I agree, that may be pushing the limits a bit. My power supply gave out and made my PC shutdown during encoding and writing to disk intensive operations. Just a thought.

did you increase the voltage when you overclocked? an increase that high probably isn't too stable at stock voltage....

Just my opinion but if your going to overclock that much you should probably get a better (not retail) heatsink/fan on your cpu. Also step up the voltage a bit.

I was also going to mention stepping up the voltage on the cpu if you have not already and I'm assuming that what you have is a Quality 350 power supply

I've never met an Intel CPU that wouldn't take a 25% overclock,33% is common.and 50% is possible. Some years ago I ran an 800Mhz Celeron at 1.2Ghz,standard voltage, and it was rock solid with TMPEG conversions. does it reboot with any program except Virtual Dub?

A celeron does not produce the kind of heat a P4-ghz3 does and the OC ability is less w/o better cooling than retail.

  9. Sorry about the late reply. Yes i have a 350watt power supply and yes its set as Auto-Overclocked in Bios. Other programs seem to work ok Office, IE, Adobe. It never reboots. Maybe I need to manually configure the voltage on my CPU and better heat sink. My temp is somewheres around 34-39c and case is set to 90-95f. But when I start encoding i get somewheres around 42-50c on my cpu.

I'll check my bios settings and try overclocking it manually.

    Thanks

Meh, there are people OCing Gallatin 2.4 Xeons to 3.6 and 1066 FSB and keeping pretty stable on my board. Perhaps it's a VRM issue? Have you stress-tested that OC setup?

  11. I suffered exactly the same symptoms when I stressed my CPU with a high overclock. The solution is to raise the core voltage, or back it off a bit. If your CPU is above 60 deg C I believe it may get prone to crashing anyway - mine's does.

Read my guide (link in signature) to find out more about what's going on inside your PC, and why raising VCore will help.
