I got a .MOV file from a site and I can't get TMPGenc to convert it. I have already installed the .vfp for QTime, but I always get that "floating decimal error" thing. What other things can I try? Are there any other proggies that'll convert it into something manageable? I'm running win98se, p4,1.4Gb processor. So power isn't really lacking. I've tried it on 12b and 12f, and no success with either. I seem to recall someone saying that QT pro can resave to an AVI (even though I've never seen that option when I had pro installed (I've just got basic right now))
I have a DOS based MOV2AVI.exe program, but it spat out a format error and quickly shut down.

This is a common problem with Quiktme .MOV files. I have both a Mac and a PC to work solutions on and sometimes neither platform will work using the MOV2AVI or MOV2MPEG programs and they choke or just don't work.
I've tried converting to different .MOV compression formats, but that doesn't work.
Quiktme Pro will export a .MOV file to .AVI. This is what usually works for me.
If you try to do it with something like a StarWars trailer, the copy protect will keep you from exporting. However, it is not common to find this level of copy protect -- the StarWars thing is the only file I've ever heard as having it.

Well, this is a Buffy musical clip from the official website, so it might be protectd too...I dunno

The plugin for TMPGenc only works with QT v.4.0 (not 5, don't ask me why). MOV2AVI is a good program, but the audio might be protected. So what I do is use:
Radvideo Tools to convert MOV to avi (w/ huffyuv codec) and Total Recorder to generate wav file from MOV. Then encode as normal. -
Cool! Radvideo tools, eh? Is there a link somewhere here to find it? Or do I have to go "a-searchin' fer it?"
I tried encoding without the audio, with the same results. I don't know what version it was encoded under.

Mov2avi & Quicktime Players (Light not Pro) is all you need to convert MOV to AVI. So far had no problem at all converting any trailers downloaded from Apple. Those trailers that didn't work then with TMPGEnc plus QT Reader work now with TMPGEnc alone.
Things to note --
<> Place Mov2avi.exe in QuickTime\Plugins folder. It needs the necessary QT .dll's to interface with in order to function.
<> Mov2avi makes a HUGE avi and ALWAYS creates the avi in the same directory as the source movie so make sure you have plenty of disk space.
How to do --
<> Go to a command (DOS) prompt, cd\ to the directory containing the movie and Mov2avi.exe and type:
mov2avi trailer.mov -i (where trailer.mov is the name of the QT movie.) This will give you the interactive (GUI) mode of the executable.
<> Change the parameters to reflect what quality you want of the movie --
Video:
Compressor: None
Millions of colors
Quality: Best
FPS: 29.97 (NTSC)
Audio: (CD Quality)
Compressor: None
Rate: 44.100
Size: 16 bit
Use: Stereo
<> Then simply use TMPGEnc to encode. -
Are there any opinions on whether there is a difference in the quality between mov2avi and using radvideo tool?

How exactly are you guys downloading the quicktime trailers? Right clicking on them gets me nowhere.

If the link brings you to the Apple site, then click on the image, once it loads drop the plug in menu on right side where arrow is on bar of player and save to disc. But you may need Qt 5 pro for that. Also, a progressive download may go to your temp files after it loads. If not download direct by finding the link to the server (sorry, I dont feel like going into details of how) and using a download program. Or try this site first http://www.Comingsoon.net which may direct you to sites other then Apple where you can just right click.
