  1. I just bought a Panasonic DMR E50, and picked up some Maxells to go with it, just want to make sure they're OK.

    Thanks

Maxell DVD-R discs are MADE IN JAPAN (even says so on the package) and as a result are one of the better DVD-R discs money can buy.

Another good brand (perhaps even better if that is possible) is Taiyo Yuden. Sometimes Maxell uses Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs if they can't keep up with demand.

The last 10-pack of Maxell 4x DVD-R discs I bought at Wal-Mart had MEDIA CODE TYG01 which is Taiyo Yuden.

The Maxell discs are fairly cheap at Walmart but you can get Taiyo Yuden even cheaper if you are willing to buy them on-line in bulk (when I say in bulk I mean in 50 or 100 packs).

Maxells DVD+Rs are not made in Japan. The DVD-Rs are however. After a couple of time consuming headaches with cheap media, I bought a 50 pack of Maxell DVD-Rs from NewEgg and they are great! No coasters or other funny business yet. Good choice!

Don't forget the FUJI 5-packs and 10-packs of DVD-R discs.

These say MADE IN JAPAN and have always been Taiyo Yuden brand.

But the MAXELL discs are cheaper than the FUJI discs.

The DVD-Rs are. The DVD-Rs from NewEgg definetly all are.

  9. I have yet to hear of reports on fake 1-4x Maxell media. Maxell seems to sell only retail bulk in packs of 50, with the stock numbers of 635XXX. They are factory sealed spindles and are MXLRG02's (for now).

Hopefully Maxell will continue this trend and only substitute TY's when volume becomes an issue. This makes Maxell dvd media a sure bet (which you can't say about any other major retailer).

I have been very pleased across the board....silver matte printables, white matte printables, yellow tops and +R (Ricoh's). Consistent quality that's worth the extra few bucks.

There is nothing wrong with asking people in the media section what they think of a particular DVD-R. The media reviews section is alright but there in nothing better than hearing present information from people who seem like they know what they are doing. For example, people often rave about Ritek media in the reviews but in the forums, people talk about these new bad batches. It was also because of the media forum that I decided to buy Maxell instead of Ritek, and I am very happy with my decision.

Asking AFTER buying discs is a little weird though.

  13. it seems like it would be a bit pointless if eveyone started asking about what others thought... without first checking--not the media database but the forum! ,it would destroy this forum. I've been called on it myself I think.
just look before you ask, no negative intentions implied, just trying to help him and all of us.

Lobe, I just noticed we have the interesting distinction of being two strange people who mostly post in the media section.

I also post a lot in the off topic forum but most of my meaningful posts are in media. My point is that somebody like you so commited to DVD media can't be too much off-track.
