I should stick to gardening.
I've bumped into yet another codec that isn't straight-forward. What is ".xvid.mkv" and how can I play it and dump it to CD/DVD?
QuickTime player 6.5 won't touch it.
VLC opens it and plays the video, but only plays one of the 6 audio channels (and not the main one).
Seeing as it is an XVID file, I downloaded and theoretically installed correctly an "XVID Delegate Component" that purportedly allowed QuickTime to access XVID files, but that didn't make any difference with this XVID.MKV file.
VLC info on this file:
Stream 0 (Video):
codec = XVID
size = 640x340
Stream 1 (Audio):
codec = mp4a (English 6 channel)
sample rate 1 22050
There are also additional streams for Japanese audio and English/Japanese subtitles.
Under "file information", the muxing application is listed as:
"libebml v0.6.3 + libematroska v0.6.2"
writing application is listed as:
"vkvmerge v0.8.1"
Any clues or tips appreciated.

does mplayerosx play it
if so then you can use that or possibly even convert it over to a more acceptable file type for the other players
where did you get a file like this is the question on my mind -

Apparently, a special version of mplayer is req'd.

There are also some CLI Utilities to work with mkv

i love it
For playback of matroska files on MacOSX you also need a special version of Mplayerwonder if OSX is the only one with special versions of things

You can demux it with mkvtoolnix. It's command line only but very easy to install/use. There's a link on my website if you cant find it on google. Also very fast (couple of mins for 700MB mkv file) and you'll end up with the xvid and whatever audio it contains without the silly mkv container. Once you have those it's easy.
Galactica why do you always wonder where we get our files from? What does it matter to you? And please don't feed me some line about crappy encoding on PCs.
